Jones announced Wednesday that he will no longer be able to pursue his NFL career due to a kidney disease that he has been dealing with, ESPN's Field Yates reports.
ANALYSIS
Jones' 2012 season ended early due to an undisclosed medical condition, but Wednesday's announcement seems to clarify what the issue was. Jones was released by the Patriots last month after spending three seasons with the Bills, catching 82 passes for 887 yards in 35 NFL games in that span.

At 6-2, 210 and with decent speed, Jones has the tools to be productive, but his numbers playing for a lower-tier Bills passing game (10.8 YPC, 6.6 YPT) hardly portend greatness.
Entering training camp, the speedy Jones is the clubhouse leader right now for the No. 2 wide receiver spot. David Nelson is probably the team's second-best receiver after Stevie Johnson, but he's geared for slot work. Jones held the No. 2 spot last season around some injuries. He's probably the fastest or second-fastest WR on the team and his size at 208 pounds isn't bad either, but his hands prevented him from taking a bigger leap last season and that's something we'll be looking at this year. If he wins the job, there would still be a slew of No. 2's around the league who provide more value, but this isn't a bad offense to take your shots late in the draft either, as guys like Nelson and TE Scott Chandler far exceeded expectations last season. Marcus Easley and Derek Hagan, among others, are also expected to be in the running for that vacant starting spot.
An undrafted free agent who made a nice leap and actually saw the field in 2010, Jones will still have to fight for a roster spot in 2011. He appears at best a No. 5 or No. 6 wideout and special teams guy, but his quest wasn't helped with the summer signings of Buster Davis and Brad Smith, though the trade of Lee Evans also opens up some opportunity for everyone. Marcus Easley is also returning from a knee injury.
No. 5 or No. 6 receiver if he's lucky enough to make the team.

Jones was placed on IR this week to deal with an undisclosed medical condition, BuffaloBills.com reports. Said the receiver: "It's really something I've been dealing with so now going on I-R gives me a chance to really rest my body and get everything back together. I can't really speak on it right now. Once I go see the doctors and get a chance to talk to everybody and gather everything together I’m sure more will come out then."
