Blackburn (knee) was placed on the Panthers' injured reserve list Tuesday.
ANALYSIS

Projects as the Panthers' starting weakside linebacker, but only tallied 27 tackles (13 solo) in 13 games (seven starts) at the position last season.
After starting 15 games for the Giants last season and recording a career-high 98 tackles (64 solo), Blackburn will likely start this season as the Panthers' fourth linebacker, with potential for significant playing time given the injury history of some of Carolina's current linebackers.
Blackburn, who was a Super Bowl hero with a key interception of Tom Brady, will compete for the team's starting middle linebacker job. He's not especially fast, but he's a sound tackler, and his coverage skills are improving.
Will vie for the team's starting middle linebacker job with Jonathan Goff, Phillip Dilliard and Gerris Wilkinson. Blackburn has the most experience, but is the least athletic of the group. Will have some IDP value should he win the job, but it's doubtful he's a long-term solution at the position.
Reserve middle linebacker could have some value if Antonio Pierce were to miss any time.
Reserve middle linebacker, could see action if Antonio Pierce gets hurt.
Will backup Antonio Pierce at middle linebacker. Should anything happen to Pierce, Blackburn could be viable in deeper IDP leagues.
Blackburn will back up Antonio Pierce at middle linebacker. Should Pierce get hurt, Blackburn could be useful as an IDP fill in as middle linebackers are virtually guaranteed a fair amount of tackles.
