ANALYSIS
You're getting old if you can remember when Bledsoe and Rick Mirer were neck and neck for the top pick in 1993, which went to Bledsoe. One could argue he had a Hall of Fame career, though perhaps it's even easier to say there weren't too many bright spots in his final seasons with the Bills and Cowboys. He was a very good quarterback with some very good seasons, but at some point the game passed him by and his immobility hurt his effectiveness. Bledsoe finishes with 44,611 yards (seventh all time) and 251 touchdown passes (13th) in his career.

He’s this year’s Kerry Collins in that he’s getting a premier wide receiver who has a history of turning his QB into a fantasy monster. Don’t discount this just because things didn’t work out for Collins at the end of last year (mostly because Randy Moss was severely limited by injury). Throwing out last year because of the time he missed with the suspension, Owens’ teams have averaged sixth place in TD passes since 2000. And his teams are always at or near the top of the league in YPA. Remember, the Cowboys are adding Owens to one of the league’s top receiving tight ends in Jason Witten and explosive flanker Terry Glenn. Assuming his receivers stay healthy, Bledsoe is a solid bet to finish with 4,000 passing yards and 25-to-30 TD passes. But the downside here is that he’s not very good in a vacuum. We know he’s immobile, but his accuracy is below average (15.8 percent poor throws). He averaged only 6.97 yards on first down attempts, giving Bill Parcells little reason to up his pass percentage on these downs (21st overall). And his inability to respond to pressure (just a 67.9 rating on a whopping 112 late/close attempts) caused conservatism in the red zone, too. Last year, the Cowboys were 27th in red-zone pass percentage. But Bledsoe was seventh in converting these chances. He’ll have more opportunities and better odds of success with the game’s premier red-zone weapon lining up next to him in ’06. Bledsoe is very durable. And the arm strength is still there, as evidenced by his 95 QB rating on 102 11-to-20 yard attempts.
If Bill Parcells could squeeze 3,532 yards out of the 41-year-old Vinny Testaverde last year, he should be able to put a declining Bledsoe in a position to be productive as well. The key for Bledsoe is to have time to step into his throws in the pocket and not be asked to move too much or make quick decisions. To that end, the Cowboys likely will rely heavily on the running game and when they do have to throw will make sure enough bodies are on the line and in the backfield to keep Bledsoe from getting pressured. If they do that, Bledsoe should be able to use his strong arm to make downfield plays and avoid some of the fumbles and poor throws that have hurt him the last couple seasons.
The team brass had plenty of discussion regarding Bledsoe before committing to him as their clear-cut guy for 2004, feeling the veteran is still a far better player than the numbers showed last year. Bledsoe, in turn, is excited about coach Mike Mularkey's offense, as the head coach and his creative new quarterbacks coach, Sam Wyche, believe Bledsoe will rebound if they devise ways for him to get the ball out of his hand quicker. A big running game and better line play are all part of it, but Bledsoe's got to do things to help himself and he knows it. Bledsoe should improve enough to be a reliable No. 2 for you, say 17-20 touchdowns and 3,200 yards. He'll be in more of a ball control offense aimed at moving the chains, so don’t expect anything close to his 2002 season (4,359 yards and 24 touchdowns). Think nice, safe, No. 2 fantasy QB if things get back to normal.
