Greg Jones

Jones, signed as a free agent away from Jacksonville, entered training camp as the presumed starter at fullback for Houston. The Texans use their fullback strictly has a blocker, but like to throw to that position as well. There are a couple of other fullbacks in camp, but Jones has the most experience and is a proven blocker.

Jones is one of the most dominant fullbacks in the league, paving the way for Maurice Jones-Drew and Rashad Jennings. There have been rumblings that he could be on his way out to clear roster space, but it'd be hard to imagine a Jacksonville backfield without Jones.

Jones may siphon the rare goal-line carry, but it has been made clear that he is a fullback above all else, and will therefore touch the ball rarely. Don't use him as MJD's handcuff.

Jones will start at fullback in 2009, and could see short-yardage carries while spelling Maurice Jones-Drew.

While Jones may get the occasional red-zone carry, his role on the Jaguars is almost entirely as a fullback, blocking for standout tailbacks Maurice Jones-Drew and Fred Taylor. Jones also doesn't catch many balls out of the backfield, and is often removed for multiple tight end sets.

Jones missed the entire 2006 season with a torn ACL, and will return in 2007 with a reduced role in the Jags' offense. The emergence of Maurice Jones-Drew as a red zone touchdown threat greatly reduces Jones' fantasy value, and we expect him to only receive the occasional fullback carry.

Jones was expected to see action as a short yardage back for Jacksonville in 2005, in an effort to protect Fred Taylor, but when Taylor got hurt anyway Jones stepped in as the lead running back and did pretty well before getting injured himself. With Taylor’s future with the Jaguars uncertain and the club using a second round pick on Maurice Drew, any number of scenarios are possible for Jones, from the scoring half of a power and speed backfield tandem with Drew to seldom-used goal line specialist. Whatever happens, though, expect the 6-1, 250-pound. bruiser to walk away with a handful of scores.

Jones racked up 333 yards on 88 carries as a rookie last season. He didn't overly impress during his first year in the league and gained the majority of his numbers by either filling in for, or spelling starting running back Fred Taylor. He showed up to camp at 250 pounds, which is ten pounds lighter than last season, and instead looks to assume the role of starting fullback for the team. Expect Jones to receive a good amount of work around the goal line and in short yardage situations when he is not clearing holes for Taylor.

Jones was given the opportunity to be the primary backup to Fred Taylor, but begins the regular season third on the depth chart behind Taylor and LaBrandon Toefield. He got the most carries in preseason, largely due to injuries in the backfield. He learned both the fullback and halfback positions, suggesting the team will find a role for him in 2004.
