Chris Perry: Released By the Bengals
RBFree Agent
April 27, 2009
The Bengals released Perry on Monday, one of five players cut by the team, the Cincinnati Enquirer reports.
ANALYSIS
Perry lost the starting job to Cedric Benson last year and never really appeared to recapture the explosiveness that he had before his panoply of injuries. Also waived were safety Mike Doss, tight end Nate Lawrie, RB Gary Russell and DE/LB Eric Henderson.

Perry might be the most injury-prone player in football, having not played since 2006 and missing an average of 10.5 games per season since being drafted in 2004. Still, he was taken in the first round for a reason, as he has a terrific combination of size and speed. Perry has gotten 4.6 YPC during his NFL career while also displaying tremendous receiving skills. While there's no guarantee he'll stay that way, he enters the year 100 percent healthy for the first time in a long time, and the coaching staff already labeled him the backup to starter Rudi Johnson, who is hardly a safe bet himself. When you consider Cincinnati's offensive system with Perry's potential and lack of alternative RB talent on the roster, there's sizeable upside. Of course, he has to stay on the field.
Once again expected to miss a significant part of the 2007 season, this time with an ankle injury. The Bengals' selection of Kenny Irons in the second round this year is a good indicator of how little they expect from Perry.
As change-of-pace backs go, Perry has more value than most due to a Bengals red-zone passing plan that uses running backs more than tight ends. Perry also has better size (6-0, 225 lbs.) than your average ìthird downî back. Perry’s 4.6 yards per carry in 2005 also hint at the possibility of a windfall should anything happen to Rudi Johnson, but for now the former first-round pick’s receiving skills are what make him worth rostering.
Perry was the Bengals' first round draft pick in 2004, but a sports hernia kept him off the field for most of the season. If healthy, Perry looks to be the primary back-up to starter Rudi Johnson. Perry is a shifty back and a good receiver, so he could also replace Johnson in third down situaitons. He has looked good so far in camp, and appears to be the primary fantasy handcuff for Johnson.
Why did the Bengals spend a first-round pick on Perry? The Michigan alumnus’ north/south focus will make him the likely choice as their goal-line back. The Bengals finished 27th in short-yardage running efficiency, and Rudi Johnson scored on just 5-of-18 carries inside the 10. Johnson hasn’t shown much niftiness or hands out of the backfield, and scouts view Perry as an excellent receiving threat, as evidenced by his 44 catches for the Wolverines last year.
