Cartwright was released by the 49ers on Friday, Cam Inman reports.
ANALYSIS
Cartwright has always been an excellent special teams player, but was stuck behind the 49ers' plethora of quality backs on the depth chart. He could definitely end up on a roster of a team looking to beef up their special teams play.

Cartwright is the front-runner for the third running back spot on the Raiders' roster, but he is unlikely to see many carries behind the tandem of Darren McFadden and Michael Bush. Don't expect him to make a fantasy impact.
Will continue to return kick offs and play special teams. He is also the third string running back behind Clinton Portis and Ladell Betts.
Third string running back behind Clinton Portis and Ladell Betts. Spent 2007 returning kickoffs and will compete with rookie Devin Thomas in 2008.
Plays primarily on special teams. He returns kickoffs and covers punts. He only carried the ball five times in 2007 and will compete with Derrick Blaylock for the third string running back position. With Clinton Port and Ladell Betts in front of him expect another five carry season.
Cartwright will likely fill the third string running back job once again. He will also see significant time on special teams.
Cartwright is a small back who plays mostly on special teams. He adds depth at the running back position but is not expected to get many carries in 2005.
While Cartwright saw unlikely minutes as the feature back in 2003 with injuries to and ineffectiveness by Ladell Betts and Trung Canidate, he drops significantly down the backfield depth chart with Joe Gibbs and Clinton Portis coming to town. Gibbs utilizes an extra tight end rather than a fullback in the backfield, and the diminutive Cartwright hardly fits the job description. His best bet to get carries is as a third- or fourth-string tailback behind Portis, Betts, and possibly Chad Morton.
