The 49ers released Nkemdiche on Tuesday, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
ANALYSIS
Nkemdiche's stint in the Bay lasted just three weeks. He'll have to look for another opportunity elsewhere, but in the meantime his departure should open up more practice reps at defensive tackle for Kevin Givens and Akeem Spence.

For the second season in a row, the Cardinals' first-round pick made nary an impact, with Nkemdiche's five appearances following D.J. Humphries' bagel in 2015. Just two years later, Humphries has elevated himself to starting left tackle, a progression that's possible for Nkemdiche. First, though, the mental side of the game is Nkemdiche's biggest hurdle. He's made inroads on that front with a consistent presence at Arizona's facility throughout the offseason. His next steps will arrive during training camp and the preseason, when he'll have the chance to stake a claim to the hole left behind on the defensive line by Calais Campbell's departure to Jacksonville.
One of the top athletes in the 2016 NFL Draft, Nkemdiche dropped all the way to the Cardinals at pick 29 due to character concerns. All that aside, he'll look to make an immediate impact on the field. At 6-foot-3, 294 pounds, the defensive tackle has Sheldon Richardson-like upside thanks to a 40-yard dash of 4.87 seconds, 35-inch vertical, and 116-inch broad jump.
