Weekly Rankings: Week 3 Value Meter

This article is part of our Weekly Rankings series.

Sunday update complete

Welcome to the Weekly Value Meter Rankings. This is a guide to help you decide who to start and sit in a given week. It's is not a season-long ranking nor a draft guide, and it's also not really intended as a free agent guide. While I appreciate that you want my opinion on pickups, every league is different, and your decision on whether to add/drop a particular player might also be dictated by other factors than who is rated higher in a given week.

Here are my operating assumptions for the rankings:

- The RB/WR/TE position rankings are for PPR leagues.
- The Flex rankings are for Standard leagues.
- 1 point per 10 rushing/receiving yards.
- 1 point per 20 passing yards.
- 4 points per passing touchdowns.

These are the rankings I use when I make my start/sit decisions. Please consult the rankings first before asking "Player X vs. Player Y?" without any other mitigating factors. Of course, I welcome debate - if you think I'm wrong, let me know. But please check out the rankings first before asking your start/sit question. This truly reflects my opinion in my leagues.

These are my particular rankings. If you want a second opinion elsewhere on the site, you can see our Weekly Projections.

Starting after Week 1, the rankings for the subsequent week will first post on Tuesday nights. I will then do a set of updates before kickoff on Thursday, and again before kickoff

I will post at the top of the article in bold font when ranking updates are in progress and when they're complete.

I welcome debate on the rankings in the comments. Please keep it friendly.

Quarterbacks

1.Kyler Murray ARZ at JAX
2.Patrick Mahomes KC vs. LAC
3.Josh Allen BUF vs. WAS
4.Russell Wilson SEA at MIN
5.*Lamar Jackson BAL at DET
Note: Jackson missed practice Thursday with a stomach ailment but should be fine to play Sunday. ***Jackson returned to a full practice Friday.***
6.*Jalen Hurts PHI at DAL
Note: Because of his rushing floor, Hurts can have a productive fantasy game even when the team lays an egg offensively overall.
7.*Justin Herbert LAC at KC
Note: The refs just threw another flag against the Chargers while I typed this. Yes, I'm still salty.
8.Dak Prescott DAL vs. PHI
9.Matthew Stafford LA vs. TB
10.Aaron Rodgers GB at SF
11.Tom Brady TB at LAR
12.Kirk Cousins MIN vs. SEA
13.*Derek Carr LV vs. MIA
Note: Carr injured his ankle late in the win over the Steelers and had an MRI on Monday. His status is uncertain for this week. Nathan Peterman is the current backup with Marcus Mariota out with a quad injury. Full practice on Wednesday.
14.Daniel Jones NYG vs. ATL
15.Ryan Tannehill TEN vs. IND
16.Teddy Bridgewater DEN vs. NYJ
17.*Justin Fields CHI at CLE
Note: Field appears likely to start this week against the Browns. He wasn't great last week - 6-13-60-0-1, with 10 carries for 31 yards. The scrambling ability is appealing however - his speed locked up the game late when he evaded the pass rush and scrambled for a first down. Officially getting the start this week, with Nick Foles backing him up.
18.Sam Darnold CAR at HOU
19.Jared Goff DET vs. BAL
20.*Matt Ryan ATL at NYG
Note: Ryan threw for 300 yards Sunday, but needed a whopping 46 attempts to do so and threw two pick-sixes.
21.*Joe Burrow CIN at PIT
Note: Burrow threw three consecutive interceptions and was under pressure all game. Going to Pittsburgh doesn't seem like a good cure for that.
22.*Baker Mayfield CLE vs. CHI
Note: Mayfield was briefly sidelined last week after hurting his left shoulder following an interception. He is 'sore, but fine' though he'll be without Jarvis Landry (knee) this week, and maybe OBJ too. Full practice participant on Wednesday. It appears that he'll have OBJ available on Sunday.
23.Taylor Heinicke WAS at BUF
24.*Jimmy Garoppolo SF vs. GB
Note: Garoppolo threw just one pass over 11 yards last week in the win over the Eagles. That won't suffice this week against the Packers.
25.*Ben Roethlisberger PIT vs. CIN
Note: Roethlisberger is dealing with a left pectoral injury, leading coach Mike Tomlin to say '... we'd better be ready to be adjustable ...' Roethlisberger sat out practice Wednesday but returned to a limited practice Thursday. He might not have Diontae Johnson this week. ***Roethlisberger was cleared from the injury list on Friday, but he will be without Diontae Johnson, who was ruled out on Friday.***
26.Trevor Lawrence JAC vs. ARI
27.Jameis Winston NO at NE
28.Mac Jones NE vs. NO
29.*Jacoby Brissett MIA at LV
Note: Brissett struggled to move the Dolphins at all once Tagovailoa got hurt. Brissett will start this week with Tua Tagovailoa out with broken ribs.
30.*Zach Wilson NYJ at DEN
Note: Welcome to the NFL, kid. Next up, a road game against Vic Fangio's defense.
31.*Davis Mills HOU vs. CAR
Note: Will start on Thursday night against the Panthers. He was 8-18-102-0-1 against the Browns last week.
32.*Carson Wentz IND at TEN
Note: Wentz injured both ankles and left the game last week against the Rams. Jacob Eason replaced him in the game and would start if Wentz can't play. Wentz hasn't practiced yet this week, but it was Brett Hundley (still on the practice squad!) who got the first-team reps on Thursday, not Eason. ***It now looks as if Wentz will start, but will he finish?***
33.*Brett Hundley IND at TEN
Note: Hundley, who is still on the Colts' practice squad, got the first-team practice reps Thursday, with Carson Wentz sitting out. ***Hundley was elevated from the practice squad to the active roster, though it looks now as if Wentz will play after all.***
34.Taysom Hill NO at NE
35.*Trey Lance SF vs. GB
Note: Lance didn't play a snap against the Eagles last week.
36.Mason Rudolph PIT vs. CIN
37.*Jacob Eason IND at TEN
Note: Eason got to learn about Jalen Ramsey quickly upon making his regular season NFL debut. Took the first-team reps Wednesday, but second to Brett Hundley on Thursday.
38.*Tua Tagovailoa MIA at LV
Note: Tagovailoa left early last week with a rib injury that was still giving him pain on Monday. Jacoby Brissett is the underwhelming backup. ***Not only was Tua declared out this week, but he was placed on IR by the Dolphins on Saturday.***
39.*Andy Dalton CHI at CLE
Note: Dalton is considered 'week-to-week' with his knee injury and is unlikely to start. The Bears said that Dalton remains the starter when healthy, but if Fields starts and plays well this week, I would bet against Dalton regaining the job. Dalton has been ruled out for this week.
40.*Tyrod Taylor HOU vs. CAR
Note: The Texans placed Taylor on IR for at least the next three weeks with his hamstring injury. Rookie Davis Mills will start.

Running Backs

1.*Christian McCaffrey CAR at HOU
Note: McCaffrey briefly left last week's win over the Saints to get an IV for a cramp, but later returned. ***McCaffrey is expected to miss multiple weeks with the hamstring injury he suffered on Thursday night.***
2.Derrick Henry TEN vs. IND
3.Nick Chubb CLE vs. CHI
4.Austin Ekeler LAC at KC
5.Aaron Jones GB at SF
6.Alvin Kamara NO at NE
7.Chris Carson SEA at MIN
8.Najee Harris PIT vs. CIN
9.Jonathan Taylor IND at TEN
10.*Saquon Barkley NYG vs. ATL
Note: Barkley was limited in practice both Wednesday and Thursday, but this seems more like load-management than a setback. ***Barkley remains limited in practices, but he was cleared from the injury report this week.***
11.Joe Mixon CIN at PIT
12.Ezekiel Elliott DAL vs. PHI
13.David Montgomery CHI at CLE
14.*Miles Sanders PHI at DAL
Note: Sanders was a limited participant Thursday with a chest injury. The Eagles play on Monday night. ***Full participant on Friday, good to go for Monday night.***
15.Ty'Son Williams BAL at DET
16.*D'Andre Swift DET vs. BAL
Note: Swift (groin) was limited with the Lions' first practice of the week on Thursday - this is how they're going to manage him, I think. ***Full practice on Friday.***
17.*Antonio Gibson WAS at BUF
Note: Gibson (shoulder) was a full participant in Thursday's practice. ***Full participant again on Friday and has been cleared from the injury list.***
18.*Damien Harris NE vs. NO
Note: Harris was limited in practice Wednesday and Thursday with a finger injury. ***Removed from the injury list on Friday.***
19.Chase Edmonds ARZ at JAX
20.*Clyde Edwards-Helaire KC vs. LAC
Note: CEH just isn't involved in the Chiefs' passing game - I think that we can put the Brian Westbrook Draft Day quote behind us and move on - he's just not that back for the Chiefs right now.
21.*Alexander Mattison MIN vs. SEA
Note: Watch Dalvin Cook's status closely this week - he hurt his ankle in the loss to the Cardinals. ***Cook didn't practice with the team all week. He hasn't been declared out, but ESPN's Adam Schefter suggests that he's unlikely to play.***
22.Javonte Williams DEN vs. NYJ
23.Myles Gaskin MIA at LV
24.Kareem Hunt CLE vs. CHI
25.Melvin Gordon DEN vs. NYJ
26.James Robinson JAC vs. ARI
27.Mike Davis ATL at NYG
28.*J.D. McKissic WAS at BUF
Note: McKissic is still the main back in the two-minute drill.
29.*Trey Sermon SF vs. GB
Note: Sermon barely saw the field and then suffered a concussion on his first carry. Sermon is still in the concussion protocol and has been limited in practice on Wednesday and Thursday. ***Sermon was cleared from the concussion protocol and will likely start on Sunday night.***
30.Tony Pollard DAL vs. PHI
31.*Sony Michel LA vs. TB
Note: Michel stepped in and got a lot of work late against the Colts after Henderson suffered a rib injury. ***Henderson appears unlikely to play.***
32.Latavius Murray BAL at DET
33.*Kenyan Drake LV vs. MIA
Note: ***Drake is likely to be the primary back again this week, with Josh Jacobs listed as questionable without practicing this week.***
34.Leonard Fournette TB at LAR
35.Jamaal Williams DET vs. BAL
36.James Conner ARZ at JAX
37.Devin Singletary BUF vs. WAS
38.Mark Ingram HOU vs. CAR
39.James White NE vs. NO
40.*Michael Carter NYJ at DEN
Note: ***Splitting carries with Ty Johnson now that Tevin Coleman (illness) has been ruled out.***
41.Zack Moss BUF vs. WAS
42.Cordarrelle Patterson ATL at NYG
43.*Ty Johnson NYJ at DEN
Note: ***Splitting carries with Michael Carter now that Tevin Coleman (illness) has been ruled out.***
44.Phillip Lindsay HOU vs. CAR
45.*Ronald Jones TB at LAR
Note: Jones missed a blitz pickup, badly, that got Tom Brady sack. I'd be surprised if he's in on a passing down again.
46.AJ Dillon GB at SF
47.Peyton Barber LV vs. MIA
48.Kenneth Gainwell PHI at DAL
49.Nyheim Hines IND at TEN
50.Devontae Booker NYG vs. ATL
51.Kerryon Johnson SF vs. GB
52.Larry Rountree LAC at KC
53.Tony Jones NO at NE
54.Carlos Hyde JAC vs. ARI
55.Damien Williams CHI at CLE
56.*Demetric Felton CLE vs. CHI
Note: Felton is listed as a running back, but he could be used more as a slot receiver for the Browns while Jarvis Landry is out.
57.Samaje Perine CIN at PIT
58.Jeremy McNichols TEN vs. IND
59.David Johnson HOU vs. CAR
60.Salvon Ahmed MIA at LV
61.Giovani Bernard TB at LAR
62.Darrel Williams KC vs. LAC
63.Chuba Hubbard CAR at HOU
64.Devonta Freeman BAL at DET
65.Justin Jackson LAC at KC
66.Jake Funk LA vs. TB
67.Trenton Cannon SF vs. GB
68.*Jacques Patrick SF vs. GB
Note: Signed off the Bengals practice squad on Tuesday and will likely be active this week. Trenton Cannon is the only fully healthy running back currently on the active roster, though the Niners could promote Kerryon Johnson from the practice squad, or sign a free agent back.
69.Malcolm Brown MIA at LV
70.Alex Collins SEA at MIN
71.Kylin Hill GB at SF
72.*Dalvin Cook MIN vs. SEA
Note: Cook sprained his ankle late in the loss to the Cardinals, but at first glance he appears ok. So far Cook hasn't practiced this week. Friday's practice will be critical for us. ***Cook was listed as a non-participant in practice, though he did some work on the side. He's listed as questionable. Complicating matters is that he's playing the late set of games. For what it's worth, ESPN's Adam Schefter reports that Cook is unlikely to play.***
73.*Darrell Henderson LA vs. TB
Note: Henderson suffered a rib cartilage issue in the win over the Colts and his status for this week is up in the air. Henderson did not practice Wednesday. ***Didn't practice all week and isn't expected to play.***
74.*Elijah Mitchell SF vs. GB
Note: Mitchell had a touchdown overturned upon review, with Jimmy G stealing it with a QB sneak on the next play, and also suffered a shoulder injury. His status for this week is uncertain. Didn't practice Wednesday or Thursday, and coach Kyle Shanahan called the injury '... a little worse than a stinger ....' Yet Jenkins still has a chance to play Sunday night. ***Listed as doubtful, and would have been out had the Niners not had so many RB injuries.***
75.*Rhamondre Stevenson NE vs. NO
Note: Healthy scratch in Week 2.
76.*Tevin Coleman NYJ at DEN
Note: ***Coleman has been ruled out with a non-COVID illness.***
77.*Rashaad Penny SEA at MIN
Note: (Calf) Inactive last week. Unlikely to return this week. ***Ruled out again this week.***
78.*Josh Jacobs LV vs. MIA
Note: Jacobs (toe/ankle) is day-to-day but 'very questionable' to play Miami this week. Jacobs didn't practice Wednesday or Thursday. ***The Raiders called up Trey Ragas from their practice squad, suggesting that Jacobs, who is doubtful, will not play.***
79.*JaMycal Hasty SF vs. GB
Note: Hasty has been ruled out with a high ankle sprain. ***Hasty has been placed on IR.***

10.Tyler Lockett SEA at MIN

Note: Sutton (hip) was limited on Wednesday but slated for a full practice Thursday.
17.*Amari Cooper DAL vs. PHI
Note: Cooper suffered a rib injury against the Chargers and his status for this week is up in the air. He's played through other injuries in the past, so if it's a matter of pain tolerance, you can find a reason to be optimistic. Limited practice Thursday, but expected to play Monday night. ***Cleared from the injury report.***

45.Deebo Samuel SF vs. GB
46.Ja'Marr Chase CIN at PIT
47.Robert Woods LA vs. TB
48.Mike Williams LAC at KC
49.*Clyde Edwards-Helaire KC vs. LAC
Note: CEH just isn't involved in the Chiefs' passing game - I think that we can put the Brian Westbrook Draft Day quote behind us and move on - he's just not that back for the Chiefs right now.

51.Myles Gaskin MIA at LV
52.Javonte Williams DEN vs. NYJ

84.Sammy Watkins BAL at DET

86.*Sony Michel LA vs. TB
Note: Michel stepped in and got a lot of work late against the Colts after Henderson suffered a rib injury. ***Henderson appears unlikely to play.***
87.*Trey Sermon SF vs. GB

88.*Kenny Golladay NYG vs. ATL
Note: Golladay was limited Wednesday and Thursday, with declining activity on Thursday, with a hip injury. ***Golladay is a game-time decision, though the team is optimistic that he'll play.***
89.*Dalvin Cook MIN vs.

Kickers

1.Harrison Butker KC vs. LAC
2.Justin Tucker BAL at DET
3.Graham Gano NYG vs. ATL

7.*Pittsburgh Steelers vs. CIN
Note: T.J. Watt was one of four big injuries on defense, leaving with a groin injury. He has a chance to play this week. The Steelers were also missing Joe Haden, Devin Bush and Tyson Alualu, the latter of which will miss the rest of the season with a fractured ankle.
