Mannion is one of the top candidates to be overdrafted in college fantasy football leagues this year. His numbers from last year look great at a glance, as he threw for 4,662 yards and 37 touchdowns in 13 games. The yardage was good for second in the nation, and the touchdown total tied for fourth. Of course, his production didn't translate perfectly into fantasy production, both because he threw 15 interceptions and because he logged minus-223 yards as a rusher. In other words, once you subtract his rushing penalty from his fantasy prouction, Mannion's passing yardage is basically worth more like 4,100 yards. By either measure, Mannion's numbers will decline in 2014 now that he'll be without Biletnikoff Award-winning wideout and first-round NFL pick Brandin Cooks.
Mannion will look to unseat Cody Vaz in the QB competition for the Beavers after he started eight of the team's 13 games last season. He has a big arm and is 6-5 but had some control issues in the regular season. He had four games last season in which he threw for over 300 yards but also had three games throwing three or more interceptions. He is listed as the backup in the spring to Cody Vaz but should have the opportunity to battle for the starting job heading into the season.
Mannion was thrown into the fire as a redshirt freshman in 2011 and did reasonably well for himself, passing for 3,328 yards (7.0 YPA), 16 touchdowns and 18 interceptions. He should improve heading into his sophomore year, and in a very pass-happy offense with some talented targets to throw to, Mannion's fantasy stock is quietly on the rise as the season approaches. Markus Wheaton, Brandin Cooks and Obum Gwachum are promising receivers who should help Mannion capitalize in an offense that threw the ball nearly 42 times per game last year.
