Past Fantasy Outlooks
2023
2022
Burns and Jyaire Shorter were the top-two receivers for the Mean Green, but they had quite different campaigns. Burns led the team with 40 catches for 675 yards, but he only had one touchdown. Meanwhile, Shorter had 23 catches for 628 yards, but he somehow had 11 touchdowns. Now, Shorter is gone, but Burns is still around. There is reason to be excited for Burns as well. North Texas’ new head coach is Eric Morris, a Mike Leach disciple who was Washington State’s offensive coordinator last year. The Cougars had three receivers with over 40 catches and at least 491 yards. In 2021, Burns had 58 catches for 802 yards and four scores. Clearly, he has never had a nose for the end zone, but he could, and should, rack up receptions and yards this year under Morris, and touchdowns can be fluky and vary quite a bit from season to season. Burns is definitely an under-the-radar guy to keep in mind.
The quarterback play for North Texas was, frankly, bad in 2021. And yet, Burns managed 58 catches for 802 yards and four touchdowns. No other Mean Green player had more than 380 yards. Burns was clear the top target. That being said, expected top target Jyaire Shorter didn't play after Week 2 with an injury that was never disclosed. Shorter is expected to be ready to go for 2022. Burns' play last season did earn him the role of the top receiver, though. The only quibble is that two of Burns' 100-yard games came against Northwestern State, an FCS school, and FIU, whose only win came against an FCS school.
