Roberson announced Wednesday that he will opt out of SMU's Dec. 29 Fenway Bowl matchup with Virginia to begin preparing for the 2022 NFL Draft, Joe Hoyt of The Dallas Morning News reports.
ANALYSIS
Roberson thus concludes a stellar career at SMU, with whom he tallied 174 catches for 2,734 yards and 24 touchdowns. With Roberson out of the mix for the bowl game, Rashee Rice and Dylan Goffney should step into larger roles at receiver.

Roberson would be ranked higher if not for a lengthy injury history that most recently had a season-ending knee injury added to it in October. That makes two straight seasons cut short by injury. When healthy, Roberson has been automatic, racking up 65 catches for 1,277 yards and 11 scores on 95 targets over his last two seasons (12 games). But with injuries mounting, quarterback Shane Buechele gone and other talented options like Rashee Rice and Danny Gray ascending, Roberson isn’t the surefire impact fantasy option he was this time a year ago. Draft at your own risk.
Roberson is the top option in one of college football’s most high-volume passing attacks. The Mustangs have ranked 11th in the nation in pass attempts per game each of the last two years and Roberson showed significant chemistry with Shane Buechele in 2019 before suffering a season-ending foot injury against Houston. Roberson matched his 2018 touchdown count and bested his yardage count on 40 fewer targets, all while upping his catch rate from 50 percent to 67 percent. With James Proche gone, Roberson has a chance to be the most targeted receiver in college football this season. And when Roberson is catching a high percentage of those targets with explosive efficiency, he has the makings of an elite fantasy option at receiver.
Roberson isn't going to be the first option for the Mustangs this year- that honor will be worn by James Proche- but there'll be plenty of targets to go around in the Air Raid system. That helped get him off to a good year one in the program last year, earning 104 targets for 52 catches, 802 yards and six touchdowns in only 10 games, which was good enough for fourth most yards per game in the conference. Quarterback duties will likely be taking an upgrade in the form of Texas-transfer Shane Buechele from a position that was a rotating door last season, so Roberson should once again be a top receiver in the conference.
