Wisconsin: Melvin Gordon Will Turn Pro
December 10, 2014
Gordon announced on Wednesday's Dan Patrick Show that he will forgo his senior season and turn pro, Teddy Greenstein of the Chicago Tribune reports.
ANALYSIS
Gordon's entrance into the draft isn't surprising following a season where he amassed 2,336 yards and 26 touchdowns on the ground with a bowl game left to play. The season earned him a spot in New York for the Heisman Trophy ceremony, and likely a spot in the first round of the 2015 NFL Draft.

Past Fantasy Outlooks
2014

2012
Gordon just might be the best big-play threat at RB since Barry Sanders with unmatched ability to split the safeties and pull away from defenders. After finishing 2012 with 621 yards and three touchdowns on just 62 carries, Gordon (6-1, 206) followed with another stunning season last year, rushing for 1,609 yards and 12 touchdowns on 206 carries, good for 7.8 yards per rush. Gordon will earn an even greater share of the rushing production at Wisconsin now that James White is off to the NFL, giving him 2,000-yard potential. Sophomore Corey Clement will share carries, but like last year with the Gordon-White duo, there will be enough to go around for everyone.
Gordon is one of those players who might not be super consistent as his teams likely second running back, but his upside is high enough that he should have dominant performances when he does get a significant number of carries. Wisconsin has an extensive tradition of its second running back producing big numbers, even to 1,000-yard, double-digit touchdown extents, and Gordon is a strong bet to continue that tradition, particularly given that starter James White is more of an elusive playmaker than a bulldozing workhorse. Gordon is one of the nation's most explosive big-play threats after totaling 621 yards on 62 carries last year, so he will be exciting to watch.
Gordon was a top-rated recruit coming out of high school, so he would have high upside in Wisconsin's offense if he ever sees a big workload. The problem is Montee Ball and James White are ahead of him on the depth chart, and even Jeff Lewis is a threat to steal carries. Given all that, Gordon is only a player to monitor in case injuries occur in Madison.
