Settles into backup role
Kempt (knee) said earlier this week that he's fully healthy and has accepted his role as the top backup to freshman Brock Purdy, Tommy Birch of The Des Moines Register reports.
ANALYSIS
Kempt was cleared to suit up for the Week 9 game against Texas Tech after he was a spectator for the previous five games, but Iowa State elected to use him as the understudy to Purdy, who thrived while being thrust in the starting role while the sixth-year senior was injured. Purdy's emergence likely spurred the transfer of Zeb Noland, who received the first crack at filling in for Kempt before coach Matt Campbell turned the offense over to Purdy. With Purdy now representing the present and future of the program, Kempt will turn his focus to being a mentor for the young signal-caller while staying ready in the event an injury to Purdy opens up another opportunity.

2018 Fantasy Outlook
Kempt took over the starting gig in Week 5 against Oklahoma in 2017, and he put up 343 passing yards along with three scores in arguably the most shocking upset of the year. He has a tight hold on the starting job with only Zeb Noland and Re-al Mitchell behind him on the depth chart After losing one of his top options at wideout, Allen Lazard, to the NFL, Kempt figures to rely on Hakeem Butler as his No. 1 wideout for the 2018 season. With the Cyclones running a pass-heavy offense (54 percent), Kempt should be in line to have a productive 2018 campaign and he has the added bonus of facing soft Big 12 defenses week-in and week-out.
