Daniels is the face of quarterback transfers in college football. He’s hopped around, and around, in hopes of finding the right spot for himself. Once a vaunted recruit, he started at USC, but never got his footing there. He then went to Georgia, speaking to his promise and how prized he was as a recruit, but he continued to have injury issues and ceded the job to Stetson Bennett. Daniels then went to West Virginia in 2022. There, he had the starting gig, stayed healthy, and simply did not produce, eventually getting benched. With the writing on the wall, Daniels has downsized. He’s now at Rice, a team that has moved up to the AAC for 2023. Daniels is going to start for the Owls. Guys with Daniels’ recruiting hype don’t end up at schools like Rice all that often. Yes, that hype has largely proved unfounded, but there is a reason USC, Georgia, and West Virginia all gave him a shot. Water finds its level, as they say, and maybe that is what is happening here. This could be the level of college football Daniels fits at, and if so, he could put up some nice numbers with the Owls. He wouldn’t be the first former top recruit who dropped down to a Group of Five school and made a splash.
Daniels is set to reunite with former USC offensive coordinator Graham Harrell, who worked with the quarterback during the 2019 season. This will provide an immediate lift and upgrade to the Mountaineers passing game with talented returning receivers in Sam James and Bryce Ford-Wheaton. Daniels has struggled to stay on the field of late, but when healthy has been effective with 4,840 yards and 32 touchdowns in 21 games with USC and Georgia. West Virginia is also set to have one of the best offensive lines in the conference which means all of the arrows are pointing in the right direction for this squad and their offensive playmakers for fantasy consideration.
Daniels is one of the nation's most polarizing quarterbacks. On the one hand, Daniels impressed in his limited sample last season coming off a 2019 ACL tear, throwing for 1,231 yards and 10 touchdowns with a 67 percent completion rate and a 10.3 YPA in four games. Skeptics are quick to point to Daniels' competition, which featured games against Mississippi State, South Carolina, Missouri and Cincinnati. It's also worth noting that Daniels will not have star receiver George Pickens at his disposal for much, if not all, of the season. That said, Daniels' strong performance down the stretch coupled with having a normal offseason and being further removed from his knee injury means that the arrow is trending up for him. He won't offer much as a rusher, which caps some of his fantasy upside, but he projects as a prolific passer who can be a viable mid-round target in season-long drafts, especially leagues with six points per passing touchdown.
Daniels had his ups and downs in 2018, but for a true freshman to win a Week 1 starting distinction at USC and then finish as well as he did in the final two weeks gives Daniels a mostly promising profile heading into 2019. He endured a subtly tough schedule to close out the year completing 57-of-85 passes for 686 yards and, three touchdowns, and two interceptions against UCLA and Notre Dame in the final two weeks, giving reason to hope for bigger 2019 passing totals. Daniels poses no rushing utility (minus-149 yards) but has a standout trio of receivers to throw to.
