Done after bowl game
December 20, 2023
Wells is moving on from Virginia Tech's football program after its bowl game against Tulane on Dec. 27, Damien Sordelett of The Roanoke Times reports.
ANALYSIS
The announcement was given by Virginia Tech's head coach Brent Pry, who did not specify whether his quarterback would transfer or turn pro. Regardless, the 2023 Military Bowl will be his last game as a member of the Hokies, who are expected to continue using Kyron Drones as their starting quarterback for said matchup.

2021
Grant Wells exited spring with a seemingly firmer grasp on the Hokies starting quarterback job than he entered with following a rough first year in Blacksburg. He completed just 59.0 of his passes after being better than 60 percent in two years at Marshall, while throwing as many interceptions (nine) as touchdowns. He was also sacked 30 times behind an offensive line that couldn’t pass or run block, as the Hokies produced only 3.1 yards per carry, though Wells did rush for six scores. While his leadership, poise and decision making per praised during the spring, further dampening hopes of a rebound season is a lack of receiving weapons. Last year’s leading receiver, Kaleb Smith, is gone, choosing to retire after initially transferring to Notre Dame, forcing the Hokies to hit the transfer portal hard and Wells in turn to develop chemistry with new options. Finally, Wells doesn’t seem to have the upside of Baylor transfer Kyron Drones. Should he and the team struggle early, it wouldn’t be surprised if the coaching staff makes a change to spark the offense. All in all, there doesn’t appear to be much upside in Wells for 2023, though he could flash in the right matchup on a weekly basis.
Wells is heading into his fourth collegiate season, and is looking to be named a starting quarterback for the third consecutive season. After redshirting his freshman year at Marshall, Wells went on to throw 460 completions with 5,623 yards and 34 touchdowns. The quarterback also added 236 rushing yards and nine touchdowns in these two years. One downside to Wells’ time at Marshall was that he had 13 interceptions in the 2021 season, which is not going to pass in a more competitive ACC conference. Wells will of course be hoping for the QB1 role, but he will likely be competing with fellow transfer Jason Brown. Both quarterbacks come with starting experience and will be battling it out presumably until the fall.
Wells was named the starter for Marshall as a freshman in 2020, and it was an up-and-down campaign to say the least. He literally threw five touchdowns one week and five interceptions the next. However, he was a young player learning on the job, and he still threw 18 touchdowns against nine picks. With experience under his belt, Wells should be in a better position in 2021, especially with a more normal offseason.
