Strong showing in final game
December 18, 2023
Holani notched 17 carries for 138 yards and two touchdowns during Saturday's 35-22 loss against UCLA. He also added one reception for 45 yards.
ANALYSIS
Holani wrapped up his collegiate career on a high note, notching a pair of rushing scores, including a 66-yard scamper in the fourth quarter. The senior will finish an injury-hampered campaign with 744 rushing yards and seven touchdowns on 133 carries across eight games. With Holani out of eligibility, Ashton Jeanty figures to see the bulk of work next season, with Jambres Dubar potentially assuming a larger complementary role.

2020
Healthy for the first time since his freshman campaign in 2019, Holani led the Broncos with 1,157 yards on the ground. He also rushed for 10 scores, which tied him with quarterback Taylen Green. Yes, Green does a lot of damage with his legs, and there is another back in the mix at Boise State as well in Ashton Jeanty. As a true freshman, Jeanty rushed 156 times for 821 yards and seven touchdowns of his own. Concerningly for Holani’s outlook, in Boise’s bowl game Jeanty ran the ball 28 times for 178 yards, while Holani only got seven carries. Yes, Holani finally got healthy and had his second 1,000-yard season, and what now? He’s dealing with a promising young back breathing down his neck, plus a quarterback who is likely to rack up 100 carries (including sacks, and possibly excluding them) as well.
Holani was part of a committee backfield in 2021, but was easily the Broncos most effective rusher. His 4.8 yards-per-carry led the trio of tailbacks that played major roles, and his long run of 38 yards was the highest on the team. The halfback now enters 2022 as the clear lead back, with Cyrus Habibi-Likio and Andrew Van Buren both out of the picture. Expect less of a committee approach this season in Boise, as the next man up behind Holani, Tyler Crowe, logged a meager 21 carries in 2021. Holani’s experience, and the rest of the Broncos’ running back rooms’ lack thereof, puts him in great position to dominate the touches out of the backfield. If he can add an element of explosiveness to his game, Holani could burst out onto the national scene in 2022.
Holani's 2020 was derailed by an MCL injury that limited him to three games and prevented him from building on his 1,000-yard campaign from his freshman season. Boise State lost its head coach over the offseason but the offensive core remains the same. Holani projects to be the starter; however, the addition of Cyrus Habibi-Likio from Oregon could take some goal-line chances off Holani's plate. Habibi-Likio had 21 red zone touchdowns for the Ducks over the last three years. Look for Holani to be the primary ball carrier, but bear in mind that his touchdown upside could be capped.
The Broncos have a pretty good history of running backs, and Holani seemed primed to be the next guy in that proud lineage. As a true freshman he rushed for 1,014 yards and seven touchdowns. Holani also added 206 receiving yards and three scores through the air. This was despite the fact Boise State had to use three different quarterbacks during the 2019 campaign. More stability could only help Holani. He got the bulk of the carries as a true freshman, and that should remain true in his sophomore campaign. Holani could be yet another Broncos back to make it to the NFL, but he’s still got plenty of time to tear it up in college.
