Notre Dame: George Atkinson Declares For NFL Draft
January 8, 2014
Atkinson has declared for the NFL Draft, CBSSports.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Before being suspended for the team's bowl game for violating team rules, Atkinson was being squeezed out of the backfield mix, with only 37 carries in the final six regular-season games. He yielded touches to freshman Tarean Folston. For the year, Atkinson finished second on the team with 555 yards and three touchdowns, and at 6-foot-1, 220 pounds, he currently projects to be a late-round pick.

Past Fantasy Outlooks
2013
2012
Atkinson is in a competition with Amir Carlisle and Cam McDaniel to start at running back for Notre Dame this year, but Atkinson should be considered the safe favorite between the three. Other than Dri Archer and De'Anthony Thomas, there might not be anyone in the country who can match Atkinson's big-play ability. He has burning speed on a 210-pound frame, and has shown the ability to go deep both as a runner and returner. He runs a bit upright and is a bit of a injury concern as a result, though, so Atkinson has a boom-or-bust element to him as a fantasy investment. There's so much upside with Atkinson, though.
Notre Dame is expected to move Atkinson from running back to receiver in hopes of finding someone vaguely capable of replacing Michael Floyd. Atkinson was one of the nation's elite kick returners in 2011, averaging 26.1 yards per return and scoring twice, so his explosiveness is certainly intriguing. His lack of experience, though, merely makes him one to monitor.
