SMU: Garrett GIlbert Suffers Knee Injury
QBSMU
Knee
November 23, 2013
Gilbert left Saturday's game against South Florida with a knee injury, ESPN's Brett McMurphy reports.
ANALYSIS
Prior to exiting the game, Gilbert completed 19-of-23 passes for 138 yards, with no touchdowns and an interception. His absence will press freshman QB Neal Burcham into action, and Burcham almost certainly won't be able to match Gilbert's production.

Past Fantasy Outlooks
2013
2012
2010
Gilbert enters his second season under center for the Mustangs after transferring from Texas in 2011. As a junior last year, Gilbert completed just 53 percent of his passes, but still managed to throw for nearly 3,000 yards in Coach June Jones’ uptempo offense. The 6-4 Gilbert also ran for 346 yards and eight touchdowns. He’ll need to minimize interceptions in 2013 (15 last season), but Gilbert, a once-heralded recruit, could be primed for a big year in his second season in Jones’ offensive system.
The blue chip Texas recruit turned out to be a complete bust for the Longhorns, but perhaps a change of scenery will get the best out of Gilbert in 2012. He will have a much easier level of competition to manage in Conference-USA, and SMU has a legitimate No. 1 receiver in Darius Johnson, as well as an elite runner in Zach Line. Even as he struggled badly in the Big 12, Gilbert always showed good rushing ability, so he's a very intriguing fantasy prospect to monitor in 2012 in the event that he gets his passing production together.
Gilbert got off to a rough start in the National Championship game against a crushing Alabama defense, but the sailing should be much smoother from this point. Texas has a history of making its quarterbacks productive early on in their careers, and Gilbert has the ability to continue that tradition. Don't expect Colt McCoy-like numbers right away, but expect Gilbert to keep the Texas offense among the nation's best.
