Notes from around the league on a bleak Sunday for Packers fans and anyone who invested early shares in one Jordy Ray Nelson:
- if you have email or text news alerts set up for your fantasy players already, your phone may have vibrated itself to pieces this afternoon trying to handle all the Jordy Nelson news. First he had an ankle injury, then it was a torn ACL, then Packers coach Mike McCarthy refused to confirm that report and said only that Nelson had a knee injury but they were hoping for good news based on further tests. All we really know right now is that he injured himself trying to turn upfield after catching a pass but walked off under his own power, although favoring his right leg slightly. If the worst does come to pass my Steak League team is screwed, but it also leaves a lot of loose targets in the Green Bay offense. Davante Adams is the obvious choice to step up, but if he's already rostered Jeff Janis, a raw athletic specimen drafted out of Division II last year, could also be worth a look
- it wasn't a good day to be a backup quarterback either. Both the Packers' Scott Tolzien and the Cowboys' Brandon Weeden, the primary understudies for Aaron Rodgers and Tony Romo, left their preseason games with possible concussions. Neither Tolzien nor Weeden had any value on their own, of course, but if they're sidelined for any length of time it would leave some very inexperienced QBs (rookie fifth-round pick Brett Hundley and second-year UDFA Dustin Vaughan) just one missed blocking assignments away from being handed the keys. Johnny Manziel also left Sunday's practice with a sore elbow, although Browns coach Mike Pettine downplayed the issue
- another preseason favorite got some bad news when Steelers starting center Maurkice Pouncey injured his ankle and will need to undergo surgery. If, as seems likely, he misses a significant amount of time, Pittsburgh's offense will lose some efficiency - they were second in total yards and seventh in points last year with a healthy Pouncey, but 20th and 16th in those categories in 2013 when Pouncey missed 15 games
- Nick Toon may have taken himself out of the battle for the Saints' No. 3 wide receiver spot with a high ankle sprain that could sideline him for the rest of the preseason and possibly Week 1 as well. The door is now open for Brandon Coleman to justify all that sleeper talk, something he hasn't really done through the team's first two preseason games
- although he's expected to be back in time for Week 1, 833-year-old Roddy White will undergo surgery to clean up his elbow. (OK, maybe he's only 33). However ancient he is or isn't, his inability to stay healthy makes him an extremely risky player to invest in as well as making fourth-round pick Justin Hardy someone to keep your eye on. Camp darling Leonard Hankerson is actually having the better preseason so far, but Hankerson spent four years in Washington looking good in the preseason before disappearing when the games mattered, so he's got a little more to prove to me before I throw any FAAB dollars his way
- it wasn't all doom and gloom around the league. Robert Griffin was back at practice Sunday in 11-on-11 drills, and seems to have escaped Thursday's pummeling without serious injury. Unless Washington's offensive line shows a marked improvement over the next couple of weeks though, it's hard to see Griffin remaining upright for any length of time this season
- the Patriots brought in Reggie Wayne for a workout due to the fact that they have approximately 57 wide receivers injured at the moment. He's unlikely to be signed, but if he shows he has anything left expect Bill Belichick to get Wayne in uniform then keep him under wraps until Week 6, when he'll hit the Colts up for 90-plus receiving yards and a score in what will be his only useful fantasy output of the season
