Friday was draft day for some and daft day for others (I'm talking to you, Don Sweeney). Here are a few highlights (and oddities) for me:
- Bruins' general manager Don Sweeney -- driven and decisive, or just compensating for something small? Wow. I actually thought there was something strategic going on with those trades and the resulting three consecutive picks. Nope.
- Peter Chiarelli is everything that Craig MacTavish has never been. Stable. Clever. Strategic. Glory is returning to the Oil Patch sooner rather than later.
- The Jackets very quietly got perhaps the draft's best offensive defender in Zach Werenski and the best shutdown guy in Gabriel Carlsson, too. People will talk about their last couple drafts, but not for a few years. But when they do, it'll be in the month of June.
- Dougie Hamilton in Calgary -- the Flames actually gave up less than they would have had to if they'd gone the offer sheet route. Smart. Really smart. Let's just say they burned the Bruins.
- Buffalo may have the strongest corps of centers in the NHL. Wow. Ryan O'Reilly, Jack Eichel, Zemgus Girgensons and Sam Reinhart. Can you say "set"? I can, even if O'Reilly bolts after next year.
- The Canes could hardly contain their giddiness when this year's Seth Jones -- Noah Hanifin -- was sitting there at five. Now let's just hope they don't screw this up, too.
- Milan Lucic is actually tailor-made for the left coast, but his game -- at least his five-on-five play -- have been on the decline for a while. We'll have to judge this deal in three years.
- Garth Snow actually impressed me Friday night. Maybe he's getting the hang of this GM thing after all.
- I just realized that fireworks are illegal in the state of Massachusetts. So how long do you think it'll take the authorities to ring Sweeney and ticket him for ramming a Roman candle into the rectum of his roster?
- I like Ivan Provorov, but I'm not sure I can stomach him in orange and black. A buddy of mine is so thrilled that even his texts are full of hot air.
- It was hard to watch Jansen Harkins' face every time he was passed over. Sportsnet did a big feature on him and his family, revealing the struggles his older brother has had dealing with a genetic disease. Pretty much everyone, including me, thought he'd go between 20 and 30. #longnight
- Best line of the night? About Daniel Sprong: "He's an individual athlete in a team sport." What a nice euphemism for SELFISH. Top-five skills; bottom-five character. He'll go tomorrow for sure. Hopefully his team is blessed with patience.
