TRENDING UP
Draymond Green: Aside from shooting more three-pointers this season, Green is essentially putting up the same stats that he did last season on a per possession basis. He is providing fantasy owners with just under 12 rebounds, 4+ assists, 2 blocks, and 2+ steals per 100 possessions, which is almost exactly what he did last season:
Season | FGM | FGA | FG% | 3P | 3PA | 3P% | FT | FTA | FT% | TRB | AST | STL | BLK | PTS |
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
2013-14 | 5.2 | 12.7 | 40.7% | 1.5 | 4.6 | 33.3% | 2.3 | 3.4 | 66.7% | 11.4 | 4.2 | 2.8 | 2.0 | 14.2 |
2014-15 | 6.5 | 14.6 | 44.3% | 2.1 | 6.3 | 33.9% | 2.7 | 3.7 | 74.0% | 11.8 | 5.0 | 2.1 | 2.0 | 17.8 |
The major change in Green's value this season has come because he is playing 33 mpg, compared to just 22 mpg last season. If you're worried that his hot start is a fluke, this should help you stop worrying. This is who Draymond Green is, at least as long as he's playing starter's minutes.
Initially, it was thought that Green would only see this level of playing time while David Lee was out with an injury, but in coach Steve Kerr's words, "I put Draymond out there. Draymond took the job". As long as Green is the starter, he should be considered a borderline top-25 player in rotisserie leagues.
TRENDING DOWN
Kevin Love: We all expected to see Love take fewer shots in Cleveland, but he is also unexpectedly shooting what is essentially a career worst percentage from the field, a disastrously-low-for-a-power-forward 43% this season. This decline in his field goal percentage is coming mainly from a decline in effectiveness close to the hoop.
Per NBA.com Stats, Love is shooting just 47% within ten feet of the basket this season, down from 57% last season. NBA.com also tells us that Love is getting these possessions close to the basket later in the shot clock and holding the ball longer before he shoots it, which suggests that the Cavs are relying on him to create his own shot in the post more than the Timberwolves did in the past. Love is struggling to capitalize on these opportunities, as you can see here on a play where the Cavs get Love a shot opportunity late in the shot clock and he struggles to convert:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lJzWWtqqdQc
Love's rebounding has also taken a dip this season, he's averaging a merely very good 10.2 rpg compared to his elite 12.5 rpg from last season. This decline is not simply due to the Cavs limiting his rebounding opportunities by scoring more efficiently than the Timberwolves did last season. The percentage of available rebounds that Love has grabbed has dropped from 18.7% last season to 16.8% this season. Per NBA.com stats, that decline has come mainly from a decrease in uncontested rebounds (7.6 last season to 5.9 this season). This is a stat that has little to no value in real life basketball, almost anyone can grab an uncontested rebound (positioning does help), but it is the difference between being an elite rebounder and a very good rebounder in fantasy basketball.
WORTH OWNING
Mario Chalmers: Erik Spoelstra cleared up any uncertainty about who his starting point guard is this week when he said that Chalmers will be the starter going forward. This means Chalmers should consistently play around 30 mpg, and provide strong assists and steals numbers going forward.
A word of both caution and optimism on owning Chalmers: he plays much better when Wade is out. So far this season, Chalmers is averaging 22.5 points and 8.6 assists per 100 possessions without Wade on the floor and just 14.8 points and 4.8 assists when Wade is on the floor per NBA.com Stats. Chalmers is worth owning when Wade is in the lineup, but becomes a must start when he's out. Fortunately for Chalmers owners, it's a pretty safe bet to expect Wade to miss at least some time going forward.
As a result, I'd rather own Chalmers (39% ownership) going forward than Isaiah Thomas, Reggie Jackson, or Tony Parker, who are all owned in at least 70% of ESPN leagues.
Others: Gorgui Dieng (48% Owned), Robert Covington (34%), Courtney Lee (22%), Kentavious Caldwell-Pope (13%), K.J. McDaniels (11%)
CONSIDER DROPPING
David Lee: Lee is owned in 75% of ESPN leagues, but is playing just 19 mpg since returning from injury despite the fact that Andrew Bogut is sitting out with an injury. It's very rare for a player to be worth owning in a standard league when they aren't playing more than 24 mpg, and Lee is no exception. Until his role changes due to injury or trade, there are likely better options for your fantasy team.
Others: Nick Young (56%), Amar'e Stoudemire (50%), Lou Williams (43%), Alec Burks (35%)
