This week started with a really active period in AL Tout Wars, plus I have a bonus league, with the monthly supplemental free agent draft for the month of April in my XFL league, which is a quasi-dynasty league. It's a salary cap league, and while there are escalating salaries, you don't have to sign the players to contracts. Let's jump right to the results:

I knew that this would be a heavily contested week, as there were a number of AL injuries plus a handful of interesting players available. In a mono league, anytime you find a player with some possible staying power, you jump on it. So I was in on the bidding for Griffin Canning, Hansel Robles and Emilio Pagan, but not enough. I'm not heartbroken about losing out on Robles and Pagan - nothing against them on the merits, but my bids there were "keep them honest" bids of $53, and I had them as contingencies behind Canning. I legitimately thought that $53 would be enough on Canning, but alas his prospect pedigree and the allure of two starts this week was too much for me to get him. Here's how the bidding broke down on those three players plus Luis Rengifo respectively:
Hansel Robles:
Rob Leibowitz - 370
Rick Wolf/Glenn Colton - 75
Larry Schechter - 55
Jeff Erickson - 53
Chris Liss - 36
Mike Gianella - 16
Doug Dennis - 12
Emilio Pagan:
Patrick Davitt - 199
Wolf/Colton - 75
Erickson - 53
Gianella - 50
Schechter - 43
Liss - 39
Jason Collette - 31
Dennis - 12
Griffin Canning:
Schechter - 88
Wolf/Colton - 75
Erickson - 53
Mike Podhorzer - 24
Liss - 17
Gianella - 16
Luis Rengifo:
Erickson - 103
Wolf/Colton - 36
Gianella - 24
Schechter - 21
Tout Wars used to have a Vickrey bidding system, so that the "winning" bid paid one dollar more than the next highest bid. So Captain Overbid offenders like myself, Rob Leibowitz and Patrick Davitt all would have gotten rebates on our respective wins. I listed these out to get a sense of how the various touts approached their bids this week. I think Rick & Glenn expected that to win one of the top three pitchers, instead of merely making "keep them honest" bids. I thought I had a reasonable chance to win Canning, but I didn't even have the second place bids. Many of the other bids were in there to ensure that their competitors didn't receive windfalls on the players.
As for the merits of Rengifo, I need stolen bases and that's something he can provide, assuming he gets the playing time the rest of the way. I think that the way the season has progressed for the Angels, they are committed this time to playing him. Why else would they promote Canning, demote Cody Allen from the closer's job before placing him on the IL, and move Justin Upton to the 60-day IL?
XFL (15-team mixed league, uses OBP, monthly waiver moves):
This is a waiver snake draft, rather than a bidding system, and it's a keeper/dynasty hybrid league. This isn't a perfect representation of the order, because the very first pick was traded away by Brian Walton to the team co-owned by Trace Wood and Tim McLeod - so Jason Heyward and Hector Neris were the first two picks of this monthly draft, and Leury Garcia was really taken at the end of the second round.
I had just one closer coming out of the auction - a discounted (for good reason) Cody Allen, and my attempt to get another closer in the March supplemental draft failed miserably with Trevor May. I still like May's skills, but it's telling that the Twins haven't given him any save chances yet. So my first three picks were stabs at getting improved late-inning roles. It was a pleasant surprise that Turnbull and Bassitt were still available in the fourth and fifth rounds respectively, and Casali was added just to get a little bit more playing time than Max Stassi. This team is in third place, way better than I expected it to be coming out of the draft. I haven't been hit nearly as hard by injuries as some of my competitors - witness some of their drops like Michael Fulmer, Steve Souza and Arodys Vizcaino. That's not always a good thing - in a league with monthly moves, my chances of mistakenly dropping the wrong player increases.
NFBC Main Event
This was a very active week in bidding in all of my leagues. I just lost Joey Wendle in this, among many leagues, for the second time already this season. While I needed a MI infield replacement, I was a little hesitant to go hard after Carter Kieboom, who I assumed would cost $200+ (an incorrect assumption as it turns out, at least in this particular league). Kieboom was picked up in all 38 Main Event leagues, and his $115 winning price was fifth cheapest among those leagues. Instead I picked up Luis Rengifo from the Angels as my Wendle replacement. Rengifo had 41 stolen bases across three minor league levels last season and has a decent hit tool. I think that he sticks with the Angels this time, as they start to promote their top prospects.
I had a dilemma with the big closer names this week. Emilio Pagan picked up three saves to one from Diego Castillo for the Rays last week; the Angels demoted Cody Allen from the closer role and didn't announce a specific closer, but Hansel Robles was in line to get the save chance Sunday before the Rays scored three tack-on runs in the top of the ninth against the Royals. I happen to own Castillo and Ty Buttrey from the respective teams already, in addition to two full-time closers in Jordan Hicks and Felipe Vazquez. I didn't want to drop either Castillo or Buttrey to pick up their respective counterparts, as I don't think their respective roles are sealed just yet. But I'm wondering if it would have been wise to corner the market on the Angels, or acquired 2/3 of the Rays at the expense of the Angels. As it stands, it's difficult to hold on to both closer candidates without activating them. Eventually I'm going to need that roster space to account for the inevitable injuries that are starting to hit, that I avoided previously. I just had a lost week with Anthony Rendon, and will have to bench him this week. I can handle it, but that's one space gone. J.D. Martinez is day-to-day, and I also just lost Willians Astudillo (hence the Kevan Smith acquisition). I decided to put in modest $45 bids, that didn't get them.
I should have been in on Raimel Tapia and Matt Adams - those were good pickups for their respective owners this week - seven games with favorable handedness and/or ballparks for each.
NFBC OC1
And you can see here what is more representative of the Carter Kieboom price across most platforms. I got Laureano for his power/speed potential, as a bit of a buy-low. When the cost is Scott Schebler, you go for it, especially when Laureano's playing time is buttressed by his defense. Margevicius has two starts this week, albeit against the Braves and Dodgers. I was hoping to get either Vince Velasquez or Jerad Eickhoff first, but was too cheap.
NFBC OC2
I was pretty happy with this run-out, even if I overpaid for all three players. But Sergio Romo, Eickhoff and Danny Santana fit my needs pretty well.
TGFBI
Earlier this season I couldn't buy a player in TGFBI, now I can't figure out the going rate. Davies has two home starts this week, against the Rockies and Mets. The Rockies haven't hit all that well away from Coors Field, last weekend at Atlanta notwithstanding - though perhaps I'm understating the impact that Daniel Murphy has on that lineup. Nonetheless, this is an overpay for Davies. The Robles purchase is a happier result - he'll be a possible third closer, replacing David Robertson.

Bassitt had two good starts last week and has a decent chance to stick in the A's rotation with his improved curveball. He draws a road start against the Pirates, which is a pretty decent landing place.

RotoWire Staff Keeper League
Oops, guess I overpaid for Bassitt. It's interesting to note that I would have won Hansel Robles had I not prioritized Bassitt first. Instead, Peter Schoenke got a potential closer for only $3. I'm disappointed in this result, because at $9 next year, it's unlikely Bassitt will be keepable.
