As the summer rolls along, the waiver wire continues to be active with contenders looking for that one piece that could bump them into the money places and sellers scouring the free agent pool for young overlooked gems. Here's a summary of this week's FAAB proceedings:

Surprisingly, there were relatively few bidding wars this week, with no more than two owners clamoring for any player's services. Plenty of money was thrown around, however, as Bruce Maxwell commanded a week-high $12 while Brian Goodwin was claimed for $7. Although he spent nearly one-fifth of his season FAAB budget, Josh Rudd got a couple of hot hitters to help him push toward the top of the standings. With Stephen Vogt now out of town, Maxwell is the featured backstop for Oakland, a role he's thrived in thus far. In seven starts since being recalled, the 26-year-old has 10 hits, two RBI and four runs scored. Goodwin is also blossoming in his larger role for the Nationals, as he posted a .954 OPS with six home runs and 15 RBI in the month of June. Rudd is currently sixth in the standings, but his stock could rise if he continues to make savvy pickups such as these.

For the first time in a while, hitters were as popular as pitchers for the week, with six players of each plucked off the waiver wire. However, a good number of dollars were still put into the pitching pool, with the best-paid pitcher of the week being 24-year-old Reds starter Luis Castillo, whom Steve Broihahn nabbed for $6. Castillo held his own in his first two big-league starts (3.38 ERA, 14 strikeouts in 10.2 innings pitched), and although he hasn't pitched at the Triple-A level yet, this strong showing makes him an attractive streaming option at the very least with extra upside in dynasty leagues such as this one.

James Anderson had one of the better under-the-radar weeks, as he collected Phil Maton and Kenyan Middleton for a buck apiece. Both right-handers were fast movers in their respective organizations and are finding success in increasingly higher-leverage situations. Their youth and their clubs' tumultuous bullpen situations also make them potential options to get save chances down the road (and potentially for years to come if their performance warrants it), making this an incredible low-risk high-reward gamble for Anderson to take for just $2.

Rudd and Tim Heaney tied for the most pickups this week, although Heaney's pickups came at a much lower price. He purchased Matt Olson for the most money (a mere $4) now that he's in line for regular playing time, which ultimately helped Heaney land Todd Frazier via trade. Although his FAAB pickup won't directly help his own standings, Heaney appears to be in a position to improve his standings in the HR, RBI, and Runs categories as a result of this swap. Scooping Adam Engel up for $1 was also a strong if unflashy move, as Engel's history of stealing bases (and four successful steals already in the majors) makes him an intriguing pickup as he looks to advance up the standings further.

Finally, Sam Candee has been making some waves in the league in an effort to crack the top four in the overall standings. After grabbing Adeiny Hechavarria from the waiver wire, he dropped him shortly thereafter due to a pair of trades that netted him Lorenzo Cain, Miguel Cabrera, Dee Gordon, Michael Taylor and Melky Cabrera. Candee appears to be all in for this season, and with moves like these, it's no wonder that he's knocking on the door of the money positions.
