There's comedy. There's high comedy. And then there's an NBA owner sitting court side, heckling his own players. According to Mark Spears, Clippers owner Donald Sterling regularly heckles Baron Davisfrom his floor seats. From the article:
Among Sterling's verbal barbs:
– "Why are you in the game?"
– "Why did you take that shot?"
– "You're out of shape!"
While Sterling has also taunted other Clippers players since the middle of last season, none have received it worse than Davis.
As you might expect, Davis was not entirely pleased with this but was also constrained in what he could say. Again, from the article:
There's nothing I can say," Davis said of Sterling's taunts. "I have no comment on that. You just get to this point where it's a fight every day. It's a fight. You're fighting unnecessary battles. I'm fighting unnecessary battles."
And apparently, the heckling isn't a rare thing. In fact, it sounds pretty regular:
Sterling "started getting a lot more vocal during the second half of last season," one team source said. "He never had done that before at games. Baron's his pet project. He absolutely hates Baron. He wants to get his money back."
Now, I admit, my first response at this story was to chuckle and give one of the million "Clippers suck" jokes that have sprung up in the last 25 years. But as someone that actually owns Davis in a couple of leagues, this isn't a laughing matter. Davis has historically played to his level of motivation, and he already had injury issues on a terrible team. Now we find out that he and the owner actively hate each other, to the point that the owner literally boos him at games? This can't end well, and if Davis ever has even a modicum of a hot run I am trying my best to trade him as soon as possible.
