It's always hard to know when a new player is worthy of a pick-up, but after watching the 76ers-Celtics game I just picked up Jodie Meeks. The Sixers are a young team looking for an identity, and as such they are turning over their line-up regularly to look for pieces that fit. One of their problems, though, is that most of their good players play the same way. Andre Iguodala, Jrue Holliday, Lou Williams and Evan Turner are all ball-dominant perimeter players that are athletic slashers with questionable jump shots. Enter Meeks, a second year guard whose entire draft resume was built upon being a shooter. He was inserted into the Philly starting line-up three games ago, and in that span has knocked down 15 of 23 shots from behind the arc.
Now mind you, Meeks does nothing else fantasy-worthy. And even if he is able to hold onto the job all year I expect him to cool down from that scorching 3-point pace. But by the same token, the Sixers are struggling and they seemingly have a consistent need for a shooter. And sometimes, early in the year, if you don't take a chance early on grabbing the seemingly flash-in-the-pan player you miss out on a good thing. So I'm taking a chance on Meeks. Worst case scenario, he cools off and I end up dropping him for the next hot player this time next week.
