It's fairly quiet in the media room of the Winter Meetings, but there are a few tidbits to pass along.
The Colorado Rockies are reportedly ready to announce the signing of versatile Ty Wigginton to play a variety of positions for the club.
Wigginton can play 1B, 3B and the outfield. He hit .248/22/76 last year for the Baltimore Orioles. For the Rockies he will probably see multiple roles as a right-handed hitter with some power. Of course, Coors Field could be an ideal place for his bat. It is believed that the deal will be announced soon.
Speaking of the Rockies, skipper Jim Tracy was hospitalized early this morning after becoming ill near the elevators in the lobby of the Dolphin Hotel. An exact cause of his collapse was not revealed, but reports indicate it wasn't anything serious. MLB.com reporter Barry Bloom had a conversation with Tracy earlier in the day and he indicated the manager showed no signs of illness or stress. So the news today is all good after the early morning scare. Tracy is now back in his Florida home.
It's being reported that former San Diego starter and free-agent pitcher Kevin Correia has signed a 2 year $8 million dollar contract with the Pittsburgh Pirates. Correia didn't have a particularly great year in San Diego and he didn't have a ton of suitors here at the meetings. However, the Pirates are reportedly looking to slot him in their starting rotation. I have always liked Correia and I'm hard pressed to figure why he didn't pitch well in San Diego.
If I had to predict the next home of Jeff Francoeur I would guess the Philadelphia Phillies. I just think he fits their needs and they have a manager that can probably fix some of his hitting mechanics.
That's all for this afternoon. Maybe more later.
