So the Marlins, bless their penny-pinching hearts, have launched a new promotion to try and get more fans out to their games and at the same time, get more of their players into the All-Star Game.
Starting with this weekend's games, every Marlins fan who punches 200 All-Star ballots with votes for every Florida player on the ballot gets two free tickets to an upcoming game.
Now, if the All-Star Game were still just an exhibition, this wouldn't matter at all. It would just be a creative way for a team hurting for attendance to put fannies in seats.
But the game, sadly, does "matter" now. MLB isn't the NBA, but home field advantage does have an impact. And wouldn't it be, frankly, hilarious, if the Marlins' plan worked a little too well, and Gaby Sanchez was the starting first baseman for the National League All-Star team instead of Albert Pujols? Wouldn't you be thrilled, if you were the Phillies or Rockies or whoever ends up winning the pennant, knowing that you may have missed your chance at an extra home game because Cody Ross made the All-Star roster over Carlos Gonzalez?
