Fabio Aurelio has rejected a pay-as-you-play offer from Liverpool in hopes of getting guaranteed money elsewhere. Let's see who stumps up.
The versatile Aurelio can play on the left side of defence or midfield, but is one of the game's most brittle men. In four seasons at Liverpool, the Brazilian played only 71 games. In six prior seasons at Valencia, he played 96. That's a total of 167 matches over 10 years. A typical season is about 50 games, so in the last decade Aurelio has been able to play about a third of the schedule.
It's no wonder, then, that Liverpool wanted to give him an incentive-laden deal. Such contracts aren't widely used in soccer, however, and the 30-year-old Aurelio wants one last big payday before his body shuts down completely.
Even with the current financial crisis, there are still plenty of clubs around with too much money. Someone's going to go against the odds, give Aurelio a four-year deal, and get a year of playing time out of it in return. Manchester City is the first name on everyone's lips, but I think he'll end up in Italy. Aurelio holds an Italian passport already, so he can work anywhere worth working without a permit; the thought of a wingback streaking forward in counterattack is bound to seduce somebody in Serie A.
