What's the bigger story -- the Bruins' choke or the Flyers' path to destiny?
You'd think it was the Bruins based on all the media coverage I've heard since late Friday night. And to a certain degree, they're right.
The Bruins -- one of the best shutdown squads of the regular season -- should have been able to coast home on a 3-0 lead, at home of all places. Instead, they join the 1942 Detroit Red Wings and the 1975 Pittsburgh Penguins as the only teams in NHL history to lose a playoff series after winning the first three games.
159-3 -- that's a .981 winning percentage for teams that have taken a 3-0 lead.
But what about the strength of the Flyers, a team that was built for playoff hockey? Where's the talk about how the Flyers have joined the 1942 Toronto Maple Leafs and the 1975 New York Islanders as the only three teams in NHL history that have come back from a 3-0 deficit to steal a series?
I guess we're still in autopsy mode. And the advent of both all-sports media and the internet have amplified the discussion.
Over time, I suspect the pendulum will swing. Particularly if the Flyers can pull off the same feat as those '42 Leafs.
And that's win the Stanley Cup. Heaven forbid.
