Chelsea buried Wigan 8-0 to claim the title. Chelsea were powered by two goals from Nicolas Anelka, and a second-half hat trick from Didier Drogba after Gary Caldwell was sent off for Wigan after 32 minutes.
England supporters breathed a sigh of relief after Manchester United confirmed that Wayne Rooney's re-aggravation of his groin injury would not keep the striker out of the World Cup. Rooney hobbled off 13 minutes from time in MU's 4-0 home win over Stoke. Second in this year's EPL, the League Cup will be MU's only trophy this year.
Arsenal powered past an understrength Fulham side to guarantee a spot in the Champions' League group stage, blanking the Cottagers 4-0. Spurs will settle for fourth place and the Champions' League playoff.
Relegated sides Hull and Burnley got results in EPL swan songs. Hull drew Liverpool 0-0, while Burnley beat Spurs 4-2 after falling behind 2-0. Spurs took their feet off the gas once it became clear that Arsenal were too much for Fulham.
Portsmouth are also going down of course, and they fell 1-0 away to Everton on an injury time goal from Diniyar Bilyaletdinov. Portsmouth face Chelsea in Saturday's FA Cup final at Wembley. Chelsea are 7-to-1 odds-on favourites to lift that trophy—and just might be value for money!
Italy
Inter Milan and Roma each won on Sunday to send the title race to the final day. Inter hung on for a 4-3 win over Chievo in a bizarre match that saw the sides trade own-goals early in the first half. Inter pulled 4-1 ahead after 52 minutes but Chievo are one of Serie A's gutsiest sides and they nearly came all the way back.
Roma fell behind 1-0 on 73 minutes but Francesco Totti's late brace saw the Giallorossi beat back Cagliari 2-1.
Inter, on 79 points, travel to relegated Siena next week while Roma, on 77, head to Verona to take on Chievo. If the teams finish tied on 80 points, Roma are champions by virtue of the head-to-head record. Inter, then, still need a victory—and should return from Tuscany with another championship.
AC Milan sewed up third place, and the last automatic spot in the Champions' League, despite losing 1-0 at Genoa, when Palermo and Sampdoria fought to a 1-1 draw. Sampdoria still hold the edge for fourth place and the Champions' League playoff spot. Sampdoria, on 64 points, close out at home to Napoli, while Palermo, on 62, are at relegated Atalanta. If Sampdoria and Palermo were to finish on 65 points, the head-to-head's a wash, and Palermo would be fourth on goal difference.
Atalanta will join Siena and Livorno in Serie B next year after falling 2-0 away to Napoli.
