Week one is behind us and there were some interesting developments. Let's look at a few:

Just who is Garrett Jones? Let's not forget that Jones was blocked in Minnesota by Justin Morneau. Jones languished at the AAA level for a while. He's slimmed down, toned up and he now has an opportunity to show his power. He has the ability to square up pitches and drive the ball to the deepest part of ballparks. I think he is more than a one season wonder-especially if he gets some protection in the batting order. The pending arrival of Pedro Alvarez will help in that area.

If you thought Rodrigo Lopez would emerge as a very credible starter in the Diamondbacks rotation, take a bow. He was literally a forgotten man until Josh Byrnes gave him an opportunity in spring training. In his first outing this season he threw strikes with a velocity of 89. Pitch location, getting ahead of hitters and trusting his stuff have been the ingredients that landed him in the DBacks rotation so far. Against San Diego, they had him on the ropes early but couldn't deliver the knock-out punch. He rolled from there.

Have you watched Chase Headley this season? He looks like a world of pressure has been removed from his shoulders and he's allowing his natural talents to shine. His hitting stroke is short and sweet. Playing regulalrly at 3B following the trade of Kevin Kouzmanoff seems to agree with Headley. Yes, keep him out of LF where he was uncomfortable and it negatively impacted his approach at the plate.

Miguel Montero was getting on a roll at the plate. He was centering pitches and driving the ball towards the end of the week. Then, on a play at 1B he blew out his knee. Surgery will shelve him for several weeks. He's a tough kid and his rehab will be intense. Don't write him off for the year. He'll be back because of hard work and dedication.

I have no idea what's up with Justin Verlander. I do know that he can throw 3 different fastballs at 3 different speeds and 3 different breaking balls at 3 different speeds and a change-up. But he really didn't come right after hitters in his first two starts this week. He relied on secondary pitches too much instead of that blazing 99MPH heater. He'll get it straightened out.

Jorge Posada is toast behind the plate. Name a guy, and he's off to the races against Posada. His defense is really hurting the Yankees. But they have the ability to out hit his poor defense. It can't be ignored much longer. He looks very bad behind the plate.

I noticed that the Giants are starting runners early to avoid the base clogging that can kill their rallies.

Jack Cust is not a happy camper. He's a rare source of power for the A's and he's been sent to AAA. No word yet on his acceptance of the assignment. Not only does Cust hit some home runs for a low power team, he has the ability to get bases on balls.

Gio Gonzalez can pitch. He's a heck of a good fifth starter.

Jake Westbrook threw several wild pitches in his first start against the White Sox. Every one came on a change-up. Yikes.

I like the thought of Neftali Feliz as a closer in Texas. How long will it last? I'm not sure it isn't permanent.

Joe Torre used Broxton in two non-save situations this week and he didn't have him when he needed him in the 9th inning on Saturday. His job is to close. I don't get it.

Aki Iwamura is under rated. He's very acceptable at second base and he really has consistently good at-bats.

Ryan Howard is off to a good start. That's unusual for him, but he is really locked in and focused at the plate. That Phillies lineup is going to score tons of runs. I really like Polanco in the 2 hole.

Clayton Kershaw really scuffles on the road. I don't know why. I do know that I thought he would be throwing more strikes by now. Like Verlander, don't give up on him. He's got great stuff and a great arm.

True to form, Mike Scioscia is using Maicer Izturis. He always finds a way to get his guy at-bats. And Izturis usually delivers.

Billy Butler can flat out hit.

I want to see Luke Hochevar do it again before I totally believe. And then again after that.

The Marlins defense will continue to haunt them.

The poor start by David Ortiz is taking a toll on the rest of the lineup. Too much pressure. I'm a little concerned about VMart-just a little. But how about Kevin Youkilis. The man can flat out rake.
