The King of "systems that make fantasy stars out of unknowns" this season is undoubtedly Don Nelson of the Warriors. But Knicks Coach Mike D'Antoni has a history of doing the same, and is also coaching a lottery team that seems much more focused on 2010-11 than this season.
With that as the back drop, two young players have stepped up for the Knicks in recent games. Bill Walker has scored 20 or more points in four games in the month of March, and is coming off of back-to-back such efforts. Toney Douglas scored 19 points on Friday, earned the starting point guard slot on Saturday, and responded with 21 points and eight assists.
For most fantasy leagues, the playoffs start sometime in the next two weeks, so the question is: are either of them worth an add/play at such a crucial point in the season?
My answer is...yes. Especially Douglas. The point guard position in New York has been a turnstile, but still, the starting point guard in a D'Antoni offense is potential gold and since the rookie played so well on Saturday in a rout over the previously hot Mavs you have to think he's earned at least another few starts.
Walker is more iffy, since he is still only getting about 25 minutes at most off the bench and has sandwiched his 20-point efforts around single-digit scoring games. Plus, thus far scoring has been about the only area where Walker has been able to contribute (on Saturday his 23 points came with one assist and zero rebounds). But still, if your situation is desperate we at least know that he has 20-point upside.
So, if you have a need at guard I say give Douglas a shot. Only go after Walker if you just have a roster hole or really need some cheap production at swingman.
