An MRI has revealed a Grade 2 strain in a ligament behind Mike Dunleavy Jr.'s left knee on Sunday that will force him to miss the entirety of the Pacers' training camp.
Pacers officials were expressing hope as recent as Friday that Dunleavy would be able to participate in training camp exercises. Such hopes have since been set aside as the team must now prepare to begin the year without Dunleavy, a member of their starting unit. "It's different from the standpoint he has a grade two strain on the back of his ligament that could only show up in an MRI," Coach Jim O'Brien said, "and it's going to take some time for that to heal before he can get out on the basketball court." When asked when Dunleavy could be expected to return to practice, O'Brien replied, "It won't be in October."
Dunleavy's injury opens the door for other Pacers to establish consistent roles and fantasy value. While he should be moved down on draft boards, his teammate, Brandon Rush should see his value rise significantly in drafts as the season nears. Rush is the most fantasy relevant option that the Pacers may choose to use in their starting lineup. Dahntay Jones is another player that the Pacers may opt to move into the starting lineup, but his defensive prowess is more important to the real world of basketball than it is to fantasy.
In 17 games as the starting shooting guard for the Pacers last season, Rush averaged 16.7 points, 5.1 rebounds, 1.3 assists, 0.6 steals, 0.8 blocks, 1.9 threes, and only 1.3 turnovers while playing over 36 minutes and recording percentages of 49.4 from the field and 76.0 from the charity stripe.
Fantasy-wise, it seems like a no-brainer that the Pacers should start Rush, but who do you think the Pacers should start if they want to win: Rush or Jones?
