All is not quiet yet in MLB. Two more moves were announced that involve pennant contenders.

In their continuing effort to alter their roster of veteran players going forward, the Chicago White Sox have dispatched right-handed starting pitcher Jose Contreras to the Colorado Rockies for prospect pitcher Brandon Hynick and cash. Hynick is a right-hander with a 10-9 record and 3.83 earned run average at Triple A Colorado Springs. He is seen as a promising starter. He's 6 feet 3 and weighs 205 pounds.

Contreras has been a disappointment in Chicago. He leaves with a 5-13 record and a 5.42 earned run average. His inconsistency from start to start was a major problem. He returns for another tour of duty with the Rockies, giving the club some additional starting pitching down the stretch.

The Diamondbacks have announced the acquisition of right handed pitcher Kevin Mulvey from the Minnesota Twins for cash considerations. Mulvey is not the Player To Be Named Later in the Jon Rauch deal. In fact, the Diamondbacks will receive cash for that transaction. The Rauch trade and the acquisition of Mulvey are to be considered as two separate transactions.

Mulvey will join the Diamondbacks during the last month of the season. He was 5-8 with a 3.93 earned run average at AAA Rochester for the Twins.
Mulvey is 28 years old and is considered to be a pitcher with some promise. He has good three pitch command and can probably fight for a roster spot with the DBacks 2010 club.

All in all, the National West has seen the contenders each add at least one starting pitcher for the stretch. The Giants added Brad Penny, the Dodgers Jon Garland and Vicente Padilla and the Rockies Jose Contreras. Each Has NL West experience and each knows the hitters well.

The three contending NL West clubs play each other throughout the month of September and they could each rain on the other's parade. Of course, the Wild Card is also in view and that's where a club like Atlanta could become very dangerous down the stretch. It should be a great finish.

Are we done with roster musical chairs? Maybe not. Just because a player won't be eligible for the post season if obtained now, it doesn't mean that same player can't add significant value to a club for this last month. It also might be the perfect environment for a club to dump salary on a contender going forward or clear roster space for the future. In this economic and competitive climate, anything can happen in a month. It probably will.
