Who Closes in Arizona?

Chad Qualls dislocated his kneecap on the final play of the game on Sunday, getting the save but needing help off the field afterward. He's due for an MRI today. Meanwhile, the D-Backs have traded away the two most likely closers-in-waiting in Jon Rauch and Tony Pena.

This makes for a wide open race for the job. I'm assuming that (a) Qualls will be out for a while; and (b) we might not have an official announcement naming his replacement right away. Here are the top candidates to close:

Juan Gutierrez- pretty solid strikeout rate, only two homers allowed this season, but also a pretty hefty walk rate. He pitched the eighth inning on Sunday.

Dan Schlereth- last year's first-round pick, he has closing experience in the minors and is striking out a batter/inning in his brief major league body of work. But he's very inexperienced at the major league level, and also has control issues of his own.

Esmerling Vasquez - Formerly a starter, Vasquez has held his own but hasn't dominated as a reliever with the big league squad. Little upside here.

Blaine Boyer - Since joining Arizona, Boyer has a 2.25 ERA in 28 innings, but only a 14:10 K:BB. His strikeout rate has really dropped since shouldering a big workload with Atlanta last year.

I'll have Will Carroll on the RotoWire Fantasy Sports Hour today at noon ET/9:00 a.m. PT to talk about Qualls' injury, among others. Will also will address some football injuries, including Matt Cassel and Tom Brady's. Later we'll have RotoWire Scout Bernie Pleskoff on the show - he lives in Arizona, so he can give us our first-hand impressions of the AZ relievers. Join us on Blog Talk Radio:
