Brett Favre signs with Vikings. Three weeks ago today (on a Tuesday, my day to write this blog), Brett Favre announced that he was going to stay retired instead of joining the Vikings. At the time, I talked about how glad I was that the never-ending stories about him would finally end. Today (also a Tuesday), Favre completely reversed course and signed a one-year deal with the Vikings. I'd say he's tauting me, but in reality, he's taunting everyone. Hey, at least those 25 ESPN employees get their jobs back. Anyway, in all seriousness, Favre immediately becomes a top waiver selection leagues that have already drafted. And for those still to draft, I'd put Favre right around Matt Hasselbeck and Matt Cassell, who are 16th and 17th, respectively, on our Cheatsheet. I doubt Favre becomes starter-worthy in standard leagues - the Vikings are built around the running game and defense, and their options in the passing game are not elite. That said, Bernard Berrian and Visanthe Shiancoe get a significant increase in value with Favre under center. Favre has always liked tight ends, so Shiancoe is a fringe starter in standard leagues. And Berrian is a sure-fire starter in 3 WR leagues and a fringe starter in 2 WR leagues. As for Tarvaris Jackson and Sage Rosenfels, they now belong on waivers.
Brandon Marshall renews trade request. The Broncos have not renegotiated Marshall's contract, so he'd just as soon follow Jay Cutler out of town. It would be hard to see the Broncos trading Marshall, particularly at this stage of the season, but his unhappiness and the strained relationship with the Broncos certainly doesn't help his fantasy value.
Mike Goodson becoming a sleeper. Jonathan Stewart's achilles injury is really bothering me - not just because he's not practicing, but because it has lingered for several months now. Meanwhile, Goodson is getting second-string carries and made the most of them in the Panthers last preseason game, posting 43 yards rushing on 6 carries with a 14-yard TD. The Panthers are a run-oriented team, so if Stewart is out, Goodson is a name to keep in mind as a sleeper at RB.
