The Yankees didn't intend for their new gleaming monument to baseball excess to play like a band box... but that's what's happening.

Granted, the sample size is exceptionally small -- and may be influenced by the fact that the only teams that have played in the new stadium so far are better-than-average offensively -- but through six games (two exhibition games with the Cubs and a four-game series with Cleveland), there have been 28 homers hit in the new Yankee Stadium. Right field seems to play particualrly short.

Yankee manager Joe Girardi and Cleveland skipper Eric Wedge noted the trend when speaking to the New York Post.

It will be interesting to see if this continues -- or becomes more pronounced -- when the weather starts to warm up. If so, we might see even more power than expected from guys like Mark Teixiera, Nick Swisher, Jorge Posada and Derek Jeter (a righty who hits to the opposite field regularly.) Of course, the ERA numbers for New York's pricey pitching staff could trend in the opposite direction.
