Yahoo Sports! Jason Cole reports the gap between the two sides is whether the Giants throw in Domenik Hixon or Steve Smith along with second and fifth-round picks. The Giants offered the package with Hixon, and the Browns are holding out for Smith.
This deal will get done. The Giants are Super Bowl contenders, getting Osi Umenyiora back, and there's no way they go into the regular season without a serious No. 1 WR. I can see why they want to keep Smith, who's a talented slot man and possession receiver, particularly effective on third down, but this gap will be closed to land a player of Edwards' caliber. (Hopefully, they find another way to do so than parting with Smith, but either way, it should happen).
Moreover, that second-round pick they have is an extra one, acquired in the Jeremy Shockey trade last year. For them to deal a perpetually banged-up Shockey, and a fifth rounder (plus a complementary receiver) for one of the top talents in the league at the position is well worth it.
Of course, Edwards had a terrible season in 2008, but he's young and healthy, and the more disciplined environment in New York should improve his focus.
