Last week, I wrote that Kevin Gregg would likely be the Cubs' closer. While I still believe that, the percentages went from 80/20 to 60/40 today after manager Lou Piniella delayed his decision until the middle of next week.
To this point, Gregg had essentially won the job, missing bats and not allowing runs. But Marmol has bounced back during his last two outings, and apparently Piniella wants to see more. That means he's not ready to award the job to Gregg just yet, and presumably Marmol could do something to overtake him.
Our feeling is that as long as Gregg stays lights out (he struck out three in 1.1 innings today), he'll still probably win the job. But Piniella just added another 3-4 days for Gregg to screw up, or Marmol to flat out dominate, and that puts the outcome in more doubt.
