While working on our first draft of Charging the Mound for 2009, I had the Louisville - Georgetown game on in the background. For some reason, instead of the usual Big East announcers, Mike Patrick and Len Elmore were doing the game.
Louisville has been controlling this game for most of the second half, leading by a margin of 8-15 points. With 4:05 left in the game, Georgetown scored on a fast break dunk to cut the lead down to 10. After the play, Patrick said:
"... Georgetown cuts the lead down to 10. But this seems to be the Maginot Line. Every time they get within 8 or 10 points, Louisville seems to have an answer ...."
Now, I appreciate a good historical reference in a sports broadcast as much as the next guy, probably more so. So I appreciate the effort by Patrick here, but there's one small problem.
The Maginot Line didn't exactly ultimately work out too well for the French.
Please, give me back my Raftery on Monday nights, please.
Oh, and this hardly qualifies as Patrick's Worst Announcer Goof. Just Google Mike Patrick + Britney Spears for his greatest hit.
