The Giants, who were joined by the Dolphins in setting an NFL record with only 13 turnovers this season, lost just three fumbles, the fewest by an NFL team since Kansas City lost two in 2002, according to the Giants' web site.
According to Giants beat writer Michael Eisen:
Remarkably, the Giants were minus-nine in their 2007 Super Bowl season (though they were plus-five in the postseason). This is the eighth time in Tom Coughlin's 13 seasons as an NFL head coach that his team has had a positive turnover differential. Overall, Coughlin is plus-50 in his career – despite starting minus-seven in his first two years with the expansion Jacksonville Jaguars.
We know interceptions are not luck (much of the time), but Coughlin got Tiki Barber to stop fumbling, and I don't think fumbles are, either. Individual fumbles might be luck, and certainly whether they're lost is luck, but I doubt the tendency to create or resist fumbles is. Plus-50 seems pretty high for a coach, though I don't have comparable numbers on other coaches. And keep in mind that Eli has thrown his share of picks over the last few seasons.
