In response to a couple of readers who are playing in exceptionally deep leagues, I'm going to start adding some "down on the bottom of the ocean" level selections to Working the Wire each week. Here are a couple of picks to kick things off...
Bear in mind... once you get into the 150/200 range of player rankings, picking players off the wire is more about speculation than production -- there aren't too many guys at that level that obviously need to be on a fantasy roster. So these picks are made more with an eye towards players who could start to provide good value -- as opposed to those who are providing good value but are under-appreciated.
Carl Landry - The only reason not to own Landry is concerns over his playing time... but with the Rockets battling a variety of injuries, minutes shouldn't be a problem. At around 20-25 minutes per game, Landry is a consistent double-figure scorer who will also give you boards. He's just 10|PERCENT| owned in Yahoo! leagues.
Amir Johnson - Johnson hasn't been getting much run of late, but Pistons coach Michael Curry keeps telling reporters he's going to get his regulars more rest and play his reserves more. If you have the flexibility to spot-start guys in your league, Johnson has more value when the Pistons play smaller, quicker teams -- Kwame Brown gets more run against big front lines.
Eddie House - Another speculative pick... House's value is down because his primary value is as a three-point bomber... but on the season he's shooting down in the 25 percent range from three. His career mark is close to 40 percent, which indicates the possibility for significant improvement.
Linas Kleiza - Kleiza seems to have a pretty consistent role as Denver's designated shooter off the bench -- he should produce a fairly dependable two threes per game while occasionally getting hot and scoring 18-20 points.
More next week. If you have a question about a specific player, fire away.
