Getting the Point

Can't help but be amazed at the production my two local teams -- the Knicks and Nets -- are getting out of the point guard spot.

RotoWIre managing editor Chris Liss and I discussed Devin Harris in yesterday's Give and Go column. Long story short: I won't claim to have seen it coming, but I see no reason why Harris shouldn't continue to put up excellent scoring numbers for the rest of the season (barring injury, of course), because his scoring spike seems to be based on opportunity and not some sudden improvement in shooting percentage.

But the point guard across the river from Harris' home court may be an even bigger surprise. Here's Chris Duhon's totals from the Knicks' last two games: 35 points, 35 boards.

For the math wizards in the audience, that's an average of 17.5 and 17.5 per game.

In Saturday's defense-free game against the Warriors, Duhon set a new team record by racking up 22 dimes. Last night against the Blazers, he shooting so well, he had Portland defenders biting on shot-fakes 30 feet from the basket. He scored 23 on the night.

Oh, and he's playing through a back injury because the Knicks are shorthanded.

While we expected Duhon's value to increase this season -- as the nominal starter, in a Mike D'Antoni offense, away from the job-share with Kirk Hinrich -- but he's really exceeded expectations. His value may dip a bit when and if the Knicks ever assemble a healthy backcourt -- Nate Robinson should be back soon, and when Stephon Marbury is jettisoned Donnie Walsh may opt to bring in some guard depth -- but it seems clear Duhon will be an excellent fantasy play this season.
