After a number of notable transactions and rumors to kick-start the free-agent period, Saturday was a snoozer. Here's a quick look at the minor fantasy ripples of the day.
Charles Johnson inks one-year deal with Panthers - After a strong finish during his rookie campaign in 2014, Johnson was a trendy late-round flier entering the 2015 season. Now two years and just 29 receptions later, Johnson will compete for playing time and targets for the Black Cats. The organization also signed receiver Russell Shepard on Friday, and with a lot of draft capital invested in Kelvin Benjamin and Devin Funchess, Johnson's fantasy prospects aren't promising. Remember, too, Greg Olsen is also heavily involved in the Carolina passing attack.
Darren Fells signs with Lions - With just 40 receptions and four touchdowns over the past three years, Fells hasn't been a force in the passing game, but he is a solid blocker. Tight end Eric Ebron is clearly ahead of Fells on the depth chart, and Ebron projects to remain a key cog in the Detroit offense. However, the former first-round selection has battled injuries in each of his first three seasons, so Fells could see some fleeting fantasy value as a streaming option or low-priced flier in daily contests in the event of another Ebron injury.
Lance Kendricks heads to Packers- Green Bay made a big splash signing Martellus Bennett on Friday, and Kendricks provides additional tight end depth. While the former Ram won't cut into Bennett's fantasy value significantly, Richard Rodgers' virtual outlook takes a hit. Kendricks has proven to be a serviceable possession receiver, but his fantasy floor and ceiling are both low. You're not going to be calling his name in the majority of leagues leading into the 2017 season.
Chandler Catanzaro will now kick for Jets - Following a disappointing 2016 showing with Arizona, Catanzaro relocated to New York after signing a one-year contract with the Jets on Saturday. He made just 21 of 28 of his field-goal attempts (75 percent) last year and this relocation likely won't help with MetLife Stadium a much harsher environment than University of Phoenix Stadium. Not that you should ever make a kicker a fantasy priority, but Catanzaro is likely best viewed as a desperation option until he proves otherwise.
