After taking a vicious hit in Thursday's preseason game, Tony Romo suffered a pair of broken bones in his back and is likely to miss anywhere from 6-to-10 weeks. Before the injury, his ADP was at 129, though that should plummet immediately. Fantasy owners should consider avoiding him unless they have enough bench space to handle such an extended absence.
During this weekend of the most important preseason games, there's plenty of other news to look at:
- We'll soon find out if Dak Prescott's amazing preseason was a fluke, as he's expected to be the Cowboys' starter for at least the first month of the season after Tony Romo was diagnosed Saturday with two broken bones in his back. Prescott will have the advantage of defenses being forced to load up the box to stop the run, and if he gets Dez Bryant (concussion) back for the season opener, he could be a nice fill-in for fantasy teams who'll be without Tom Brady while he serves his suspension. He'll also deserves consideration in two-quarterback leagues.
- With the Bears' offense only able to muster 20 yards in the entire first half against the Chiefs, Jeremy Langford was the only player who had a bit of success as he turned six carries into 17 yards. Although he had a couple of very positive runs, the offensive line struggled to consistently give him room to run. The good news is that he seems to clearly be feature back for the team going into the regular season, making his ADP of 59 a very reasonable investment.
- Maybe Adam Gase is a miracle worker because Jay Cutler didn't look like the same player we saw in 2015 as he struggled against the Chiefs Saturday. He only completed six of 15 passes for 45 yards and failed to get the Bears past midfield in the entire first half of play. Sure, the offensive line was without a pair of last year's starters, but Cutler seemed to lose confidence as the more he found himself under siege. His ADP of 156 has him fairly priced as a fantasy backup.
- Unless 49ers head coach Chip Kelly is trying to keep opposing coaches from seeing anything on film, it's difficult to explain why Torrey Smith didn't see a single pass target Friday, and he's yet to haul in a single pass this preseason. Regardless, the team figures to be playing from behind frequently this year, and it's tough to think that he'll be ignored on a regular basis. His current ADP of 125 minimizes much of the risk he carries, but he easily can become a significant factor if he gets at least decent quarterback play.
- Although he claims he'll be ready by Week 1, Jordan Matthews (knee) missed his third preseason game Saturday, keeping him from building valuable chemistry with Sam Bradford and Carson Wentz. His ADP has been falling throughout the month, and it's now at 73, though he's still a risky bet in his first year without Chip Kelly running the offense. He projects to be a slot receiver on a team that figures to use plenty of two-receiver sets, and that also brings about concern in terms of his potential ceiling.
- With a lengthy injury history firmly established, fantasy owners will likely have significant concern before drafting Zach Miller at his current ADP of 140 after he missed his third preseason game with a concussion. It seems to be a decent bet that he'll be ready for Week 1, but at this point it would be wise to only draft him as a backup option with upside, as he comes off of his breakout 2015 campaign.
- In the Saints third preseason game, it was clear that Drew Brees feels very comfortable throwing the ball to Willie Snead, as the duo hooked up four times for 58 yards and a touchdown. On multiple occasions, Snead found an open spot in the defense while his quarterback dropped the ball in perfectly. Although Michael Thomas has been talked up all preseason, Snead is a starter and has significant upside based on his ADP of 116.
- Carlos Hyde was knocked out of the 49ers third preseason game with a concussion, and he'll need to recover in about two weeks to be ready for Week 1. Although he had three unproductive carries against the Packers, he also was able to pop off a 27-yard run to the outside that reminded fantasy owners of his ability to be a very productive player. If he can put together a healthy season, he should be able to provide value based on his current ADP, which is at 44.
- Nervous fantasy owners can exhale a bit after ESPN's Ed Werder reported that the NFL will apparently not further investigate Ezekiel Elliott's visit to a marijuana dispensary. So far, the rookie has had a couple of offseason situations to raise concerns, but he seems a lock to be ready to roll in Week 1. To add him to your fantasy team, it'll likely cost a top-10 pick, as his ADP has risen a slight bit to 10 since he finally saw preseason action on Thursday.
