Once a highly-heralded prospect, Profar fell from grace a bit after some struggles at the major league level and shoulder issues that cost him nearly two seasons of playing time. However, the 23-year-old was given another shot with the big league club after Rougned Odor was suspended, and Profar took full advantage of his opportunity. In 10 games since being called up to the big leagues, the infielder has a hit in every game and holds an excellent .370/.383/.630 slash line. He's also driving the ball well, as six of his 17 hits have been for extra bases.
One other thing going for the former prospect is his improved plate discipline. After posting strikeout rates of 23.5% and 19.4% during the 2012 and 2013 campaigns respectively, Profar brought his strikeout rate down to 14.9% in his first ten games this season. He still hasn't recorded very many walks, but the reduction in strikeouts is still a good sign going forward even with a fairly small sample size.
It may seem to most people like Profar's role would decrease now that Odor is back with the Rangers, although it appears that the Rangers are working to get Profar's scorching-hot bat in the lineup any way that they can. Profar already has the ability to play shortstop and third base in addition to second base (his primary position this season), and the Texas brass has even begun working him out at first base while Prince Fielder and Mitch Moreland remedy their respective struggles at the plate. This hot streak isn't sustainable, but Profar is beginning to show why he was once one of the biggest prospects in all of baseball, and if he can stay healthy and continue playing at a high level, he could be a steal with the potential to fill multiple positions going forward.
