2018 Fantasy Outlook
One of the top prospects MLB extricated from the Braves' farm system over the winter, Severino received a $2.5 million bonus from the Twins -- $600,000 more than he originally received from Atlanta during the 2016 July 2 signing period. It's easy to see why his stock remained high, while other former Braves prospects who were back on the market struggled to get seven figures. Severino has a very high offensive ceiling. Equipped with special bat speed, the switch-hitting middle infielder should grow into plus power as he fills out his 6-foot-1, 180-pound frame. He struck out a lot (29.6 percent) and benefited from some good luck (.408 BABIP), but was one of only two 17-year-olds who were at least 20 percent better (125 wRC+) than the average hitter in the Gulf Coast League. He will likely move to second base, and there are going to be growing pains against more advanced pitching, but he warrants ownership in deeper dynasty leagues because of his significant long-term upside.
