Running wild in 2022
OFArizona Diamondbacks
August 1, 2022
Patino was recently promoted to High-A Hillsboro after hitting .294 with eight homers and 54 steals for Single-A Visalia, and he's hit .267/.333/.433 with a homer and four steals across his first eight games at the new level.
ANALYSIS
A lot of people were out on Patino after he struck out at a brutal 37.1 percent clip alongside a .582 OPS over 30 games with Visalia last year. However, he improved by leaps and bounds while repeating the level this year, posting an .821 OPS while trimming his strikeout rate to an acceptable 24.6 percent and running wild on the bases. Still just 20 years old, Patino has promising pop to go with his excellent speed, and he seems to be making strides in his development.

Past Fantasy Outlooks
2021
2020
Patino is the big sleeper in an organization loaded with quality outfield prospects. The 6-foot-1, 185-pound center fielder is at least a plus runner and his raw tools give him a chance to be a five-tool player, but that outcome is still all about projection. He received just under $1 million when he signed out of Venezuela in 2017 and showed well in 2019, playing primarily as a newly-turned 18-year-old in the AZL. Despite his success, it was clear that he would need to overhaul his swing to tap into his raw power, and it sounds like that happened during the shutdown period, with him showing more pop in the fall instructional league. Given his age, relatively high strikeout rates, and lack of data from 2020, Patino is still incredibly risky, but he has the tools to climb well inside the top 100 prospects if he puts everything together.
While Patino's tools set him apart from most of his peers, he currently only has one impact fantasy tool: plus speed. He has a chance to be a plus or double-plus defensive center fielder, so he figures to hang around real-life prospect rankings for the next couple years even if his bat is slow to develop. While he logged a 134 wRC+ in his age-17/18 season in the AZL, that success was driven by an unsustainably high .462 BABIP. He is fast enough to beat out infield hits, especially against weaker defenders, but he hit the ball on the ground 59.7% of the time, which is awful. At 6-foot-1, 175 pounds, he has a chance to tap into average or better power, but it will require a change to his bat path, which is easier said than done. This is where a player-development staff earns its money. Patino could be a top-50 prospect in a year or two if he makes the necessary adjustments at the plate.
