2025 Fantasy Outlook
Mahle needed Tommy John surgery, conducted in May of 2023. He embarked on a rehab assignment in early July. After compiling 18 innings spread across six starts, Mahle was activated in early August. He managed to make three starts, covering 12.2 innings before being shut down by shoulder soreness. Mahle's velocity was down, which is unusual for a Tommy John returnee, but perhaps it was related to his shoulder. The assumption is that Mahle will be healthy in the spring, but until he takes the hill, there is uncertainty. The Rangers are expecting him to be in the rotation, but they'll have to manage his workload. Just 30 years old, there is time for Mahle to enter the fantasy circle of trust, but for now he's a speculative dart, best suited for leagues with a deep reserve. Read Past Outlooks
Moves to 60-day IL
The Rangers transferred Mahle (shoulder) to the 60-day injured list Tuesday.
ANALYSIS
Mahle was already ruled out for the rest of the season earlier in the month, so his move to the 60-day IL will simply create space on the 40-man roster for Matt Duffy, whose contract was selected from Triple-A on Tuesday. Mahle will celebrate his 30th birthday on Sunday, and he figures to be ready for the start of next season.

Mahle made just five starts for the Twins before hurting his elbow and needing Tommy John surgery. He still landed a two-year, $22 million deal with the Rangers and could join that rotation late this season. Mahle was off to a strong start prior to the injury, producing a 3.16 ERA and 1.05 WHIP with 28 strikeouts over 25.2 innings in five starts. He made just two starts for the Twins in 2022 after a trade from the Reds, missing the second half of the season with a shoulder injury. The Twins got just seven starts in return for Spencer Steer, Christian Encarnacion-Strand and Steven Hajjar. Mahle won't turn 30 until next September, and his 9.5 K/9 and 105 ERA+ over the last two seasons show he can still be a rotation staple. Joining the reigning World Series champions gives him an opportunity to compile wins with strong defense and run support, but first he has to make a full recovery.

Working on new slider
Mahle is working on a new slider this spring after spending time at Driveline this offseason, Do-Hyoung Park of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Mahle has had reverse splits the last two seasons in large part because he's had trouble finding a consistent breaking ball. The hope is that the new slider will solve that issue. "I've struggled with a breaking ball for so long," Mahle said. "I couldn't find a grip that worked for me, mindset on where I need to be, mechanically, stuff like that, where my hand needs to be. Driveline fixed it right up and tailored it to the kind of pitcher I am. It has looked great. Hitters haven't seen it yet, so we'll see what they think."
