Marcano failed to win a roster spot with the Pirates out of spring training but was recalled by mid-April to serve as a utility infielder. All told, he made 14 appearances at second base and 46 at shortstop. As for his work at the plate, Marcano offers little in terms of power, as he has a .103 ISO in 447 major-league plate appearances. He showed some shown growth by dropping his strikeout rate by nine percentage points from 2022 to 2023. The end result was still only a 68 wRC+ and with little added value from stolen bases, Marcano's fantasy appeal is quite limited. To make matters worse, he tore his ACL in late July and his return is expected to come close to Opening Day. Perhaps due to the injury, the Pirates waived Marcano in early November, and he was subsequently claimed by the Padres. His versatility should prove useful as he'll be a candidate to find plate appearances in right field, competing with Jose Azocar and Oscar Mercado for playing time. Read Past Outlooks
Lifetime ban for sports betting
Major League Baseball announced Tuesday that Marcano has been issued a lifetime ban for violating the league's gambling policy, Jared Diamond of the Wall Street Journal reports.

MLB's investigation found that Marcano bet more than $150,000 on baseball, with $87,319 being in MLB-related wagers. Marcano didn't play in any of the games he bet on, and the league has determined the outcomes of the games in which he placed bets weren't compromised in any way. The 24-year-old had been on the Padres' 10-day injured list while completing a recovery from ACL surgery.

Marcano, a portion of the Pirates' return in the Joe Musgrove trade, failed to break camp with the big-league club in 2022 but played regularly from late May to mid-June. He hit .254 and put up a .702 OPS, which was a relative positive compared to the rest of the team's lineup. Nevertheless, Marcano was sent back to Triple-A Indianapolis until early August though he spent the final two months of the season in Pittsburgh. Looking ahead, Marcano will once again have to battle for a roster spot and playing time. His defensive versatility gives him a chance to do so, with his clearest path looking to be at second base. Even so, the most likely outcome is that Marcano is once again organizational depth, getting playing time when either injury or poor performance ahead of him dictates. If he earns regular playing time, Marcano profiles as a patient hitter capable of getting on base and scoring runs. However, his lack of stolen bases and the context of the Pirates' lineup holds back his fantasy potential.

Marcano had four separate stints with the Pirates this year, producing a .201/.251/.302 slash line with two home runs in 48 games while primarily playing left field and second base. His numbers in the minors were much better as he compiled a .291/.388/.443 line with five homers in 57 contests between three different levels. The 23-year-old has struggled to make solid contact in the majors and has an average exit velocity of 84.6 mph in his 176 plate appearances this year, well below the league average of 88.4.
